00:00.48golinuxeither time.  Now have 3.32 gb in ext2
00:03.00golinuxDo I have to mount it manually?
00:03.10golinuxbrb
00:08.40robert-egolinux:  just got back in here...yes you need to mount it manually.  Use the green "flash drive" symbol at the top of the page.  The other one next to it does unmounting.
00:10.57robert-eOr you could use gparted to mount it.  I wonder if that might be the problem...maybe the "manual" mount does not really work.  I will have to try that using gparted to mount.
00:12.15robert-eOn turther thought, that is not the problem, because I used geany to look at the persistance.conf file, so it had to be mounted correctly.
00:12.43golinuxThere was no option to mount in gparted.
00:13.21robert-eor maybe it is mounting read only..I should try a "save' in geany.
00:13.40golinuxis in a bit over her head
00:14.49robert-egolinux:  okay...time for food now..Linda made bbq chicken on the grill, and if I don't present myself shortly, their will be dark looks coming my way.  LOL
00:14.58golinuxI find it very hard to maneuver in refracta's default environment w/o my launchers and panel and ff profile

00:28.49fsmithredgolinux, robert-e: you do not mount the persistent partition when you boot rw

09:03.31rrqusing qemu?
09:05.52rrqthe usb story with qemu is a couple of pages
09:06.33rrqfar from "not doable" but a fair bit of this and that
09:08.05fsmithredyeah, the image is meant to be put on a thumb drive
09:08.46fsmithredvdev seems to automount additional partitions on the thumb drive when you boot from usb
09:10.22rrqI wouldn't think vdev does any mounting???
09:11.27fsmithredwell, normally, when I boot a live usb, only the first partition gets mounted, plus a persistent partition if 'persistence' is in the boot command.
09:12.01fsmithredthey both get mounted at /lib/live/mount/persistence/
09:12.30fsmithredif there's a third partition, it doesn't get mounted.
09:12.55fsmithredbooting with vdev, extra partitions are mounted at /media
09:14.15fsmithredrobert showed me output of df when he tried booting with persistence, first partition was mounted at /lib/live/mount/
09:14.29fsmithredThat'w where first part gets mounted when booting read-only
09:14.47fsmithredyet the boot command was for persistence, and sdb2 was mounted under /media
09:15.26fsmithredI'm wondering if his problem was that the partition was getting mounted at /medium before live-boot had a chance to mount it at persistence/
09:18.50fsmithredthat should have said /media not /medium

09:25.57rrqmaybe I should write it to an actual USB and forward the port instead... though I'd need to learn how.

09:27.57rrqnow it's starting
09:28.12fsmithredthere is one problem with that image - I forgot to delete S03vdev
09:29.02fsmithredthere's a way around it, but it requires booting with persistence, and so far, I'm the only one who's been able do that.
09:29.28fsmithredand I'm not seeing the extra mounts when I boot from hard drive

11:05.13fsmithredI've been trying to make a live-usb for people to be able to test vdev without installing it
11:05.27fsmithredvdev itself basically works
11:06.02fsmithredI've had to make a few changes in action files to get some devices to work
11:07.07fsmithredrrq and aitor are working on packaging - last thing aitor told me was that your suggestion to add Provides: libudev was working.
11:07.25fsmithredand I think he's got it so that installing vdev removes udev
11:07.48fsmithredthe version I'm working with (rrq's) leaves both installed
11:08.06fsmithredand I've got my own setup so that I can boot with either udev or vdev
11:08.29fsmithredso I can check how udev handles a device and compare that to what vdev does (or doesn't)
11:09.00Centurion_Danok.. cool.  I'm keen to look at building and testing vdev packages with a view to adding them to devuan experimental and maybe even jessie-backports, but need to sort amprolla first.
11:09.41fsmithredthat would go a long way to getting people to test it
11:10.05rrq"my" vdev includes a choice script to altrnate between udev and vdev
11:10.08fsmithredI haven't looked inside vdev other than action files (key-value pairs) and helper scripts
11:10.35fsmithredbut I think we need someone who can look into the guts of it.
11:10.41rrqvdev does not include the collection of vendor/product rules that udev has
11:11.12rrqthis especially affects USB device handling
11:11.37rrqthere is a standard for USB classification which comvers a range of classes
11:11.50Centurion_DanI've just had a big break through after looking at my python code for a while trying to figure out why my delta algo didn't work as expected only to find that the input files I thought were properly sorted... weren't....
11:12.51rrq.. and perhaps the USB classification standard is mostly followed nowadays
11:13.06rrqdoesn't cover scanners though
11:13.09Centurion_Danrrq: I thought vdev was supposed to have a compat layer that would use the existing udev rules if vdev specific ones weren't provided..
11:14.44rrqI'm not sure it works that way. I thought it was to offer programs emitting udev events to emit them to vdev
11:15.35rrqbut I havent' really digested that part od the code .. just focused on the packaging
11:19.16rrqif it does rely on udev even as fallback, one can't remove udev
11:20.38rrqI need to delve into that code to be able to give you a proper answer
11:20.40fsmithredssh-keygen is not doing what I want
11:24.07Centurion_Danrrq: The standard udev ruleset can be converted permanently but particularly with devices where particular software want's to change or set the rules (cups and sane are good ones for doing that) it's probably better to re-use/convert the existing udev rules - even if it's only done on install/upgrade/removal of those packages...
11:25.31*** join/#devuan penelopa (~penelopa@unstable.nl)
11:25.50Centurion_DanIf I recall correctly there are udev triggers run for some packages to setup/update rules so we should be able to utilise those triggers for vdev too.
11:29.36fsmithredrrq, email sent
11:31.32rrqCenturion_Dan: Though, I have an inuitive resistance against repeating a plain vendor/product mapping or USB devices, whcih is what udev has, and rather have a primary handling based on device/interface class; only use vendor/product for exceptions. And,
11:32.03rrqeither way, it's a hole in the vdevd code that needs to be filled in.
11:35.28rrqfsmithred: scp X fsmithred@hemma.ddns.name:.

11:40.32rrqI don't know :-) worth a try.
11:40.58Centurion_Danrrq: Fair enough, but you'll probably find software like cups and sane use device/interface for the most part anyway for their udev rules...
11:41.21rrqfsmithred: otherwise, you can select your private key with -i
11:41.54Centurion_Danfsmithred: scp -i <path to private key> ...
11:42.13fsmithredalready doing it with sftp
11:42.26fsmithredah, good - same syntax for scp

11:44.24Centurion_Dananyway, I'm off to bed, have an early meeting tomorrow...
11:44.34fsmithredg'night
11:45.05rrqCenturion_Dan: well scanner is not a USB class so it has to be by vendor/product I'm afraid. But generally I think all rules in /lib/udev/rules.d use vendor/product rather.
11:46.33rrqperhaps it's in practice unaviodable to have a large number of vendor/product based rules.
11:47.18rrqbut vdevd has one file per rule, so it needs something different
11:47.54rrqwill be all too slow to discard non-applicable rules otherwise
11:48.28fsmithredis one rule per line faster?
11:49.01rrqmoderately. you'd rather need a hash mechanism
11:49.01fsmithredand no, I'm not suggesting rules that look like udev rules.

15:37.25fsmithrededbarx, is there any operating system on the laptop?
15:38.02fsmithredi.e. do you care if you have windows? (I think I know the answer, but forgive me for asking anyway.)
15:38.02edbarxThere was Windows 7 which I nuked. I then formatted the HD with GPT. Before it was msdos
15:38.27fsmithredand it wouldn't boot with either?
15:38.43edbarxI don't want to use msdos.
15:39.03fsmithredok, but it might be good to narrow down the problem
15:39.12edbarxHow?
15:40.10fsmithredactually, I wouldn't expect it to work with msdos if it doesn't work with gpt
15:40.19muepmy impression is that you are better off using an msdos-style partition table if you are using bios-style bootloader
15:40.52fsmithredwhat I've read is that some older mobos can't handle gpt, but some can.
15:41.12edbarxmsdos is limited to four primary partitions. This laptop I am using right now is GPT formatted although it is BIOS based
15:41.33*** join/#devuan TemporalBeing1 (~Ben_Meyer@50.57.17.244)
15:41.52muepIIRC GPT has some space reserved so that you can also have an MBR there. but having two sets of partition tables adds more possibilities for having some confusing situations
15:41.55fsmithredyeah, I'm loving gpt.
15:42.05edbarxIf that is the case I can boot your ISO and try to mount a some partitions. If it succeeds it should be OK
15:42.34fsmithredyou trying to boot wheezy from usb or optical disk?
15:42.34muepI'd prefer to boot an UEFI bootloader on motherboards that have UEFI
15:43.05fsmithrednot bad, if your uefi works.
15:43.12edbarxI am not  mixing GPT and msdos. That would be asking for unnecessary complications.
15:43.17fsmithredmine is not right - I cannot change the order of bootloaders.
15:43.39fsmithredother than that, it works.
15:44.07edbarxI will do some testing to determine whether GPT is supported.
15:44.11fsmithrededbarx, my iso boots but wheezy doesn't?
15:44.48edbarxWheezy did booted but with the help of the bootloader from a CD.
15:45.09fsmithredyou trying to boot with usb-3?
15:45.19edbarxNo, from a CD
15:45.54fsmithrednow I'm confused.
15:46.12fsmithredwhat was the bootload from the CD, and where was wheezy?
15:46.34edbarxDon't bother. These are teething problems. It will be resolved. I only need to be patient.
15:46.49edbarxWheezy is installed to a partition
15:46.59edbarxon GPT disk
15:47.12fsmithredinstalled while in uefi or bios mode?
15:47.22edbarxLegacy
15:47.44fsmithredis there 1MB of free space before the first partition?
15:48.07edbarxYes. But I might be missing something about that.
15:48.48fsmithredI know you already know this, but you should be able to boot into wheezy using whatever bootloader you can, and then running grub-install /dev/sda

23:20.19rrqCenturion_Dan: re vdev. It comes in three packages, which installs and work nicely on Devuan 1.0.0. But they install as "tentative" competitor to udev, with a manual script that lets you go back and forth between using vdev or udev.
23:22.06rrqI would suggest not adding them to backports yet, but probably to updates. Vdev is functionally incomplete wrt USB device handling. Otherwise perfectly safe to use afaik.
23:22.38rrqAnd after installing, a user can go back to udev in between trialling vdev.
23:23.12robert-errq:  I did that about an hour ago (after making a clonezilla image of hd).  It was not successful, as it would not startx on a reboot.  Ran script again to choose udev, and same result..no xserver.
23:23.55robert-errq:  So I reimaged the hd, and await for another day.  No problems.  Thanks
23:24.03rrqright. though you are using fsmithred's image, or is this vaniall Devuan?
23:24.11rrqvanilla
23:24.22robert-errq:  vanilla devuan, fully updated.
23:25.09rrqok. ta. right. so maybe the packaging is still lacking (as well). hmm
23:25.59robert-errq:  It is a really good idea if it can be pulled off.  I did intall the 3 debs off your git site
23:26.29robert-errq:  I took the ones from 3 days ago.
23:28.19robert-errq:  You are talking to Danial, so I will get out of here and let you guys carry on.
23:28.46rrqyes would be the latest. I can't do things now but would be interested in exploring the reason.
23:30.07robert-errq:  sure, we can do that, when you are inclined.  Last line on the screen was the "can't start xserver--giving up" or some-such.  bbl
23:30.39rrqperhaps you could try using libudev1-compat_1.2 instead... the new version 1.2.1 includes a special "fix" that possibly would explain.
23:31.38robert-errq: I used the 1.2.1 version
23:32.36rrqyes. I made a "fix" which makes sure libudev1-compat overrides libudev1, which wasn't the case previously.
23:33.06rrqwith 1.2 I think mot things will keep using libudev1 even in vdev choice mode
23:33.15rrqmot=most
23:33.45robert-errq: Timefor my evening "mess of pottage"..will try your suggestion after dinner.  Thanks for all.
23:34.07rrqoff hand. libudev is the only connection between [uv]dev and Xorg

23:59.18fsmithredrrq, robert-e, I had a weird thing with xorg in one of the installs with vdev. No display manager on this one. I enter 'startx' and it looks like it's starting, then hangs. I have to hit ctrl-alt-F2 then go back to ctrl-alt-F1 and the desktop is there. Except yesterday (or early this morning?) it was on ctrl-alt-F7.
