00:27.24gnarfaceok so i'm forgetting something importatn
00:27.33gnarfacei can't remember how i'm giving keyboard access to Xorg
00:27.49gnarfacei mean, to my user
00:27.56gnarfacei'm NOT in the input group
00:28.10gnarfacebut it was never necessary with Xorg suid root anyway
00:28.52gnarfacehowever on this arm64 device, i replicated the same setup, i see that it's got all the same binaries suid root, yet the desktop user can't access the keyboard or mouse after X starts
00:29.05gnarfacei'm obviously forgetting something important, but i don't know what
00:29.20gnarfacealso, how do i make it put the Xorg.0.log back in /var/log again?
00:29.52gnarfacei had taken for granted i wouldn't have to do anything differently since jessie behaved the same way as sid always has
00:30.14gnarfacebut... either something is different with ascii, or i've forgotten something important
00:42.48*** join/#devuan Maarten (~smuxi@185.47.133.96)
00:44.00golinuxYeah, Xorg in ascii is different.  Are you using a login/wm?
00:44.27golinuxSeems I remember hearing that solves the problem.

00:53.43gnarfaceno gui login, same as the sid machine
00:54.05gnarfacebut presumably this behavior wouldn't be different on a fresh sid install
00:54.40gnarfacesuggesting it's auto-detecting for behavior based on checking something that is only present or in a certain state for legacy installs that were upgraded
00:54.57gnarfacewhich means it should be something i can disable again manually...

17:32.25bozonius2when I went to do something in my Devuan VM (vbox 5.1.28) today, it was apparently hung.  I could barely kill the dang thing with SIGTERM from htop.  I see that my .xsession-errors file is over a 1GB, most of it from the most recent session apparently (I used sed to grab the most recent session).   This is the 2nd time this has happened.   Only Devuan is hanging like this; I've not seen this in my other VMs (at least not lately).
17:32.25bozonius2<PROTECTED>
17:33.34bozonius2(there IS an update to vbox, but it was released after I launched devuan and I had not rebooted it as of this a.m.
17:34.01kaboutursounds like some heavy videocard error generating continuous errors
17:34.10kabouturerror/failure
17:34.12bozonius2I am NOT claiming this is Devuan's fault.  It is simply that I have not had this problem with other VMs
17:34.34bozonius2kabouter, what is interesting, though, is I see TONS of pcm underrun messages!
17:34.51kabouturPCM .. is that like speaker/sound ?
17:35.01kabouturdo you have an old mainboard?
17:35.03bozonius2but you might be right -- the video did not respond at all
17:35.05bozonius2old?
17:35.18kabouturcould be a busproblem or pci / slot in "older" mainboards
17:35.23bozonius2AMD am3
17:35.36bozonius2tech is probably 8 years old or so?
17:35.54kabouturtry clearing your CMOS and resetting your BIOS to default values
17:36.27bozonius2That happened just a few days back!   Not by choice either.
17:36.30kabouturi'm not an expert but this is what I would try in such a scenario, lacking more detailed info
17:36.50*** join/#devuan Katnjia (~KittenGNU@unaffiliated/kittengnu)
17:38.05bozonius2When I rebooted the hardware, it forced me to reset the default options.
17:38.09bozonius2So, already done.
17:38.21bozonius2yes, PCM is sound
17:38.30*** join/#devuan Oldmoss (~Oldmoss@217.23.3.171)
17:38.48kabouturso you definitely have some hardware issue at hand
17:39.28bozonius2there are gobs of reports about this pcm underrun issue, and from the looks of it, the only solution is to re-potterize sound, which I would like to avoid...
17:40.05kabouturif you have a separate vidcard instead of onboard you could try removing.. or if only onboard vid: buy a cheap vid pci-e card and disable the onboard vid during boottime in the BIOS
17:40.23bozonius2but those reports seem to be related to (ahem!) pulseaudio environments
17:40.32kabouturI remember underruns from the era where I had a lot of IRQ conflicts :)
17:40.50kabouturYou have some kind of busconflict at hand... but it could be memory too
17:40.55bozonius2I actually do have a few video cards.
17:41.06bozonius23G is not enough memory?
17:41.23bozonius23GB
17:41.32kabouturInstall memtestx86 from the depositories and let it run for a couple of days to eliminate the badmem option
17:41.52kabouturapt-get install memtext86
17:41.55bozonius2then I cannot use the machine?
17:42.02kabouturyes.
17:42.07bozonius2crud.
17:42.34kabouturyou have to leave the program do it's thing for at least 2-3 full runs (maybe 1 day with 3gb)
17:42.50bozonius212GB total.   3GB for Devuan
17:42.58kabouturit creates a little nifty bootoption in your Grub bootloader, additional to your default kernel loader
17:43.25bozonius2actually, my host (CentOS) already has memtest86 installed
17:43.34kabouturah you're taking about disksize. i was talking about memorychips
17:43.39bozonius2no
17:43.42bozonius2memory only
17:43.46bozonius2not disk
17:44.07bozonius2the host (hardware, that is) has 12GB of core/ram
17:44.15bozonius2The Devuan VM only has 3GB
17:44.20kaboutura disk problem wouldn't generate the errors you have
17:44.27bozonius2right.
17:44.53kabouturis it a VPS or do you have control over the actual hardware?
17:45.25bozonius2why would I even talk about disk in this context, other than running out of diskspace, which is not the issue -- I keep tight track of disk space usage here.
17:45.56bozonius2Vbox, running on my CentOS host.  Along with a few other VMs.
17:46.16bozonius2And I carefully monitor total memory use across the host and VMs
17:46.40kabouturI would just try the memtest86 to rule out faulty memory banks, and look for what other possible hardware issue you have from there on.
17:46.43bozonius2once in a while, the host does do some swapping/paging but not often
17:47.47*** part/#devuan n4dir (~user@200116b864b48100021a4bfffe4896d9.dip.versatel-1u1.de)
17:48.17kabouturThat's normal in Linux, even usage of lots of swap space doesn't say much. Activity of the VMM doesn't really "disclose" much
17:48.20bozonius2ok, thanks.  I might consider doing that.  Unfortuanately, this is really my only hardware at the moment, and I've got stuff to do
17:48.53kabouturI hope you get it sorted out soon, and be running Devuan without errors.. But I really think it's hardware so you need to have it fixed anyway:)
17:49.12kabouturs/errors/large logs etc/
17:49.43bozonius2consider this, maybe it is relevant.
17:51.00bozonius2XFCE4, but with 8 desktops.  I try not to overload the system, and I usually keep checking memory usage so I am not locking it up
17:51.16bozonius2usually, I am only using a couple of the desktops at any time
17:51.59bozonius2kabouter: is there a memory history monitor that is a simple plugin for devuan/debian?
17:52.23bozonius2I'd like to see if I am "peaking" and how often.  That might be a clue in sorting this out.
17:53.07bozonius2something like cacti?  only ready to go?
17:53.40kabouturbozonius2: no idea. I would indeed use cacti or something for long term monitoring of a network of servers
17:54.12kabouturyou can script things yourself. everything is in /proc/ anyway
17:54.29bozonius2true... but I like the graphical output of cacti

18:03.53bozonius2cacti wants to intsall apache, but I don't want apache.  I prefer using lighttpd
18:05.08DPAIt's just a recommends
18:05.24bozonius2how to avoid installing though?

18:09.29DPAMaybe if you add lighttpd to the package list, so it will be chosen instead of apache?
