22:59.05gnarfacein theory that's fixable from a live image
22:59.56maxrazerI read some people recommend that. I'm not sure I want to try to fix it. It shouldn't have happened though. Unless I messed it up by only changing part of the sources.list to ceres and not commenting out the rest. I don't know what else would have messed it up. But that is a bad sign that could happen.

23:01.53maxrazerThe install was jesse and I tried to upgrade to ceres.
23:02.06gnarfaceprobably would have been wiser to fully upgrade to ascii first
23:02.27golinuxmaxrazer: Take a look at this post: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=2301
23:02.27maxrazerI was surprised it was not ascii. It was a fresh download iso
23:02.51golinuxBothe ascci and jessie iso are available
23:03.25golinuxDid you read the release notes in the download directory?
23:03.54maxrazerI didn't read any release notes.
23:04.51golinuxSo you'd rather shoot yourself on the foot?
23:05.29golinuxThere is a LOT on info in there to save headaches like you're experiencing.
23:05.49golinuxDo read that thread on the forum posted above.
23:05.59maxrazerOk, I see the txt file now.
23:10.10maxrazerSo, running Devuan Ceres may have issues where I can't just use the resources and upgrade from current.
23:10.55maxrazer"Right now, merged/beowulf and merged/ceres is not functioning the same way as the Debian buster and sid branches. It seems that Devuan specific packages are not trickling down fast enough from experimental to unstable to testing. I can well imagine that the Devuan-Project just simply does not have the resources and manpower to do it any faster.

23:11.38maxrazerDoes this just pertain to testing though? Because I don't care about testing. He mentions Beowulf, not Ceres.
23:15.30gnarfacemaxrazer: a small few packages will need to be rebuilt for ceres too.  as far as i know that's automatic but not instant.
23:15.50gnarfacei should say usually automatic even
23:16.00gnarfacei'm sure manual intervention is necessary sometimes too
23:16.11maxrazerI'm going to try upgrading from ascii and see what happens.
23:16.19gnarfaceare you doing a fresh install?
23:16.23maxrazeryes
23:16.24gnarfaceor repairing the existing one?
23:16.50gnarfaceif it's a fresh install, try to do ascii headless.  don't install all your GUI stuff until after you have ceres booting
23:17.12gnarfacetry to get the upgrade done without any graphical environment
23:17.48gnarfacethat will avoid most the problems with userspace.  that may even allow you to upgrade to beowulf first which would be the official process if this were debian and beowulf weren't so very broken currently
23:17.50golinuxmaxrazer: Did you read it or just dismiss it?
23:18.01maxrazerYeah, I was thinking of not installing the desktop environment to be faster anyway.
23:18.03gnarfaceyea, also read that link
23:18.16golinuxYou have to keep some ascii p[ackages that are new than in beowulf and ceres.
23:18.38maxrazerThe web post doesn't specifically say ceres, it says beowolf.
23:19.00golinuxYou havwv to make the adjusts for beowulf for ceres to work.
23:19.52maxrazerOh, the same problems.
23:20.24golinuxSome ascii pkgs are newer.  Now we're starting to build them for ceres but earlier thy went directly into the stable release.
23:20.25maxrazerThat isn't obvious because testing is often lags behind unstable, which is why I don't use it.
23:21.16golinuxOur workflow has been different.  You can't do what you've always done.
23:21.44golinuxHopefully that will be straightened out by the beowulf release.
23:21.59maxrazerOk, good to know, thanks.
23:22.29golinuxAlso, don't use "stable" or "testing" in your sources list.  Always use the <releasename?
23:22.45golinuxSorry for all the typos.
23:23.21maxrazerI put Ceres. I saw something saying not to use the Suite name.
23:24.03golinuxI was told that "unstable" will work but "ceres" will too because is never changes.
23:24.15golinuxis > it
23:24.43golinuxAre you using deb.devuan.org in your sources?
23:25.05maxrazerI think I was. It was the default
23:26.15golinuxThe RC used pkgmaster
23:26.29golinuxThe release notes explains all of that.
