16:05.01waynedpjahoy all.  is it possible install a >5 linux kernel in Devuan via apt/etc?  i have to test out Btrfs swapfile support.  thanks.
16:06.31masonwaynedpj: You can presumably use the normal Debian make-kpkg to do it, but because it's not tied to the bleeding-edge kernel, I'd note that ZFS works with whatever kernel version you've already got.
16:10.47*** join/#devuan waynedpj (640e2def@pool-100-14-45-239.phlapa.fios.verizon.net)
16:11.29waynedpjmason thanks i will take a look at that (i am new to the Debian/Devuan world).
16:12.01masonwaynedpj: If your goal is BtrFS you'll want to look at make-kpkg first, but it's worth knowing what options exist.

16:33.23waynedpjshould the make-kpkg generated kernel basically "plug and play" into a running Devuan stable 2.1 system i.e. generate the kernel package and then apt install it?
16:33.34GyrosGeieryes
16:33.44GyrosGeierthe kernel doesn't have systemd integration
16:34.00masonyet
16:34.04GyrosGeierand the one place where it should have, the systemd people decided they didn't want it after all
16:34.12*** join/#devuan Pali (~pali@Maemo/community/contributor/Pali)
16:34.27masonkdbus was knocked down by the kernel developers, not the systemd folk
16:34.34GyrosGeierLennart's bootloader is useful though
16:35.06GyrosGeierexcept that the link that adds freshly installed kernels to systemd-boot is broken
16:35.32GyrosGeierkdbus was largely knocked down because it's a variant of netlink
16:35.44GyrosGeierand if they wanted, they could just use netlink instead
16:35.55masonWho needs a bootloader when we have the kernel UEFI stub now?
16:36.01GyrosGeierbut then they'd have to actually define an interface and everything
16:36.26GyrosGeiertrue
16:36.47GyrosGeierbut one still needs to make sure the kernel is copied to the ESP and properly registered
16:37.35*** join/#devuan rsx (~rsx@ppp-188-174-155-167.dynamic.mnet-online.de)
16:37.35GyrosGeiera minimal bootloader that pulls that information from the filesystem instead of the EFI environment, and that offers commandline edit is still useful
16:37.47masonNot hard to do, though. Lately I have efibootmgr entries for each disk in my boot mirror, and for the previous version of the kernel/initramfs.

16:38.15GyrosGeieris your solution packaged, and why not?
16:38.24masonYeah, that could be useful given the wild variability in UEFI implementations. Not all of them give you a UEFI shell.
16:38.44masonGyrosGeier: I've documented it a couple times. It needs more polish.
16:39.16masonGyrosGeier: My hope is to eventually get it into the actual installer, or at least a usable fork thereof.
16:39.28GyrosGeierwell
16:39.52GyrosGeierall the installer needs is a package to install that registers in the appropriate place

16:40.07masonI've seen folks hook into automated updates too, but I haven't done that yet.
16:40.18masonStill manual here.
16:40.52GyrosGeierls /etc/kernel/postinst.d/
16:41.04GyrosGeierjust add a script there
16:42.07masonGyrosGeier: I will at some point.
16:42.56masonGyrosGeier: FWIW, the guts of the script would be similar to: https://bpaste.net/P4SA
16:43.10masonso fairly trivial, which is actually why I haven't bothered automating it yet
16:43.54masonSome scaffolding to compare checksums to see if something has actually changed would be a nice addition, I guess, so you don't end up with the main and .old versions being identical.
16:44.24GyrosGeier.old is supposed to be a different version number
16:44.25masonMore clearly, "am I copying in something new?"
16:44.30GyrosGeierthat is what apt does as well
16:45.17GyrosGeierthere is special handling in apt that says "for packages matching 'kernel-image-*' keep the last two versions"
16:45.32GyrosGeier(when automatically installed)
16:45.36masonYeah, plugging into that would make sense.
