00:47.04plarsenjsmith, happy 4th!
00:52.08jsmithplarsen: To you as well!
00:52.15jsmithplarsen: Have big plans for the holiday?
00:57.25plarsenJust joining the local township for 4th of july stuff. Nothing major. There's a nice car-show here we go to every year.
00:57.38plarsenjsmith, how about you? Did you get your honey-do list yet?
00:58.11jsmithjust got back from Brazil this morning
00:58.27jsmithNo, haven't had a chance to be told what I'm doing tomorrow :-p
00:58.35plarsenHow was the conference "down south" ?
00:58.41plarsenhehe
00:58.55plarsenI'm sure you can use that as a valid excuse for NOT doing it (yeah right)
00:59.35jsmithThe conference was awesome
00:59.54jsmithNot quite as big as last year, but I'm guessing they still had ~5000 people at the show
01:00.14jsmithThe Brazilians, as always, are awesome hosts
01:13.20plarsenwow - 5000 !!
01:13.25plarsenJust for Fedora?
01:14.03Moe__you can tell us all about it during the next meeting
01:14.07Moe__do you have slides?
01:14.29jsmithplarsen: No, this was a big Free Software conference, not something Fedora-specific
01:14.35plarsenahhhhh
01:14.35jsmithMoe__: I'd be happy to
01:14.58plarsenIf I recall correctly Brazil's government is heavily vested with Open Source?
01:15.19jsmithYeah
01:15.34Moe__thats good
01:15.43jsmithLately, their banking institutions have also gotten onboard with open source
01:15.49Moe__for some reason RH doesnt push client/server
01:15.57jsmithHuh?
01:16.07Moe__desktop and server solutions
01:16.16Moe__they lean more toward server for some reason
01:16.17plarsenclient/server died more than 10 years ago
01:16.26plarsenI can show you it's burrial lot ;)
01:16.35plarsenSomewhere close to MS HQ in Redmond
01:16.43plarsenThey tried to keep it alive to the very last moment.
01:16.46plarsenBut alas.
01:17.07Moe__client server is not dead imo
01:17.16Moe__especially in the DoD
01:17.59plarsenEvery project I've been doing, either as proposal or architecting where DoD and other public institutions have been involved since 2000 has been 3 tier at least.
01:18.14plarsenI don't even know if there are tools do to traditional client server anymore. Oracle certainly don't have any
01:18.22plarsenWhat they had they haven't improved for 10 years ;)
01:18.54plarsenThe web killed Client/Server
01:18.57plarsenA looooong time ago
01:19.05Moe__naaaaaahh
01:19.08jsmithClient = Browser (one client for many applications)
01:19.25plarsenjsmith, not in the traditional definition of client/server it isn't.
01:19.26jsmithServer = Complex set of web servers, databases, LDAP directories, back-end storage, etc.
01:19.35jsmithisn't that traditional :-p
01:19.36Moe__that is not taking into account the many that do not have reliable connections
01:19.52Moe__doesnt take into account classified networks
01:19.59plarsenjsmith, your business logic for browser clients are mostly server based. Granted some, mostly presentation, is moving to the browser, but your logic and code is still NOT placed on the client.
01:21.46plarsenjsmith, that's why we introduced tier 2 (the web/app server). That tier is what acts as the "client" today - and the 3rd tier, your browser, is simply presentation getting it's instructions from the 2nd tier
01:22.02plarsenMoe__, client server doesn't solve that problem. It depends on a back-end just as well
01:22.26plarsenMoe__, you solve both solutions the same way - by providing "offline" features closer to the browser.
01:22.34plarsenStill doesn't make it client/server.
01:22.39plarsenIn the traditional sense.
01:24.18Moe__I dont have a warm and fuzzy about the whole "cloud" initiative or bandwagon. Too much can go wrong (Sony, CIA, Amazon.....)
01:25.28plarsenExcept for Amazon, the other two cannot be considered cloud.  But dare me to exclaim that NOTHING is 100% secure. I trust the security of a hosting center/cloud provider a lot more than MOST companies running their own internal servers.
01:25.50plarsenOr just hosts their servers in a traditional data center. A lot more break-ins there than you have in the clouds.
01:26.01plarsenIt's a bit like arguing that we shouldn't be driving cars because there are accidents.
01:26.03jsmithAre you saying that "cloud" is a very nebulous term?
01:26.09plarsenLMAO
01:26.24jsmithOK folks, I'm calling it a night :-)
01:26.26plarsendammit - I got my coffee down the wrong way there jsmith
01:26.28plarsen:D
01:26.31jsmithalways tries to end w/ humor
01:26.33plarsenok; enjoy your 4th
01:26.38Moe__later guys
01:27.00plarsennot going anywhere yet
01:27.21Moe__jsmith: is leaving? have a good night
01:29.15Moe__plarsen: was I out of line? I wasnt trying to piss anyone off you know
01:30.04plarsenno - jsmith has had a very long day and only has 1 day at home with his family. I'm pretty sure you'll find him absent all the way till Tuesday morning
01:30.57plarsenIt'll take a lot more to upset him ;)
01:31.10plarsenI'm sure he hears worse in his travels for fedora and open source.
01:32.53Moe__oh I thought I hit a nerve or something
01:33.03Moe__will make good convo at the meeting
