09:23.59TarragonIf you cannot browse to a website - why would you ever ping the IP address? I am arguing on another channel tha you can then tell if problem is your end or at webservers. Other Network engineer is saying you should only ping a well known IP that does not filter ICMP. Should I never ping someones webserver?
09:25.34pieno, that is a load of arse
09:25.40pieping away
09:25.49piemaybe ping -c1 i.p.add.ress
09:25.58piethat will only send one ping
09:26.39pieYou can eliminate possibilities with a ping
09:27.05pielike, if the web server is unreachable but the server pings then you can eliminate a load of possible problems
09:27.33TarragonThank you
09:28.41pieany systems admin that take offence at someone pinging their server to see if it is actually there is being daft

22:27.02CopeHi Leeds
22:27.56Leedshi
22:28.03Leeds37 degrees in here!
22:28.45CopeGosh! Where are you?
22:28.57CopeI reckon is comfortable mid 20s in here
22:28.58Leedsat home
22:29.56Leedsmy thermometer is showing 37... and I'm dripping
22:30.33LeedsI just went to pick a magazine up... and it was warm to the touch
22:32.12Leedswell... I could turn the light off... but then it would be dark...
22:32.18JDdid increase he temp quite a bit
22:34.55Leedswhich book?
22:35.15Leedsmy computer speakers appear to have died, so my iPAQ is providing music :-)
22:35.47Leedshmmm... is this not news? http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/030811/tech_microsoft_patent_2.html
22:36.45CopeLeeds> Its a book about the psychology of persuasion.
22:40.04TarragonLeeds: Does that news story mean everything with plugins and applets is breaking that patent?
23:08.30LeedsTarragon: I have no idea... I would imagine it's talking about ActiveX
23:10.02Leedshttp://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/search-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=ptxt&s1=5838906.WKU.&OS=PN/5838906&RS=PN/5838906
23:11.25Leedsseems to be more like ActiveX and maybe Java than standard plugins... actually - the best match would seem to be the Java VNC client...
23:12.31Leedsit explicitly mentions OLE
23:15.11gregjLeeds: take me with you
23:15.28Leedsgregj: sure! meet me at Hendon Central in 5-10 minutes...
23:15.36gregjsure

23:35.57gregjperfect even i will say :]
23:36.14Leedswell... you're wrong - it's KDE - broken by design
23:36.35gregj?
23:36.45gregjyou are not using it, how do you know
23:36.55Leeds"it's KDE - broken by design"
23:37.09gregjsay that on #kde-devel
23:37.17Leedswhy?
23:37.24LeedsI'm not a troll...
23:37.38gregjwell, you may want to argue

23:38.56Leedshey - some weirdos are happy with it and good luck to them.  doesn't mean I have to like the bloated bag of crap
23:39.35LeedsI mean come on... it's a window manager and a few applets, right?
23:39.42gregjsurree
23:39.57gregjand thats why it is 300 MB binaries+graphics
23:40.03gregj4x more apps than in gnome
23:40.12Leedsright - so you agree with me? it's a bloated bag of crap...
23:40.15gregjgnome is ,, hmm simple
23:40.30gregjno, it is not
23:40.39gregjyou can install just KDE and basic stuff
23:40.51gregjit will be about the same size that gnome is with the same type of apps
23:40.59Leedsoh...
23:41.01gregjthere is simply more apps in KDE,
23:41.11Leedsgnome is a (less) bloated bag of crap too
23:41.23Leedsless bloated because it's written in a sensible language
23:41.33gregjhaha
23:41.45gregjgnome is writen in C, and object C
23:41.52Leedsobject C?
23:41.54gregjthis second one is even more crap than C++
23:41.55gregjyes
23:42.03gregjgo through sources
23:42.12gregjevolution fe is writen in 3/4 in objc
23:42.18Leedswhat is object C?
23:42.24gregjsome parts of gnome are written in C++ as well
23:42.31gregji don't know exactly
23:42.38gregjsome middle form between c++ and C
23:42.53gregjapt-cache search object C
23:42.55Leedsthere's object-oriented C... but that's just sensible
23:43.27gregj|gj@nalesnik:~$ apt-cache search object C gcc
23:43.27gregj|gcc-2.95 - The GNU C compiler.
23:43.27gregj|gobjc - The GNU Objective-C compiler.
23:43.27gregj|gobjc-2.95 - The GNU Objective-C compiler.
23:43.27gregj|gobjc-3.2 - The GNU Objective-C compiler
23:43.30gregj|gobjc-3.3 - The GNU Objective-C compiler
23:43.40Leedsthat's objective C
23:43.46Leedswhich isn't what you said
23:44.07gregjso what it is
23:44.18Leedsobjective C is the old NeXT language
23:44.28gregjhmm
23:44.31Leedsi.e. MacOS X
23:44.37gregjthan they use c++
23:44.47gregjthey are using c++ for sure in gnome as well
23:44.50Leedsand - from what I hear - it's a lot nicer than C++
23:45.08Leedssure - there's some C++... but the *native* language is C
23:45.22gregjwell, i don't like c++ personaly
23:45.30gregjbut qt is very nice and very well written
23:45.46gregjit is a real perl
23:46.02gregjamong others c++ toolkits
23:46.51Leedsperl????
23:47.14gregjyou know, the object that is shiny and so on
23:47.16Leedswhat does perl have to do with anything?

23:51.54Leedsthere's plenty here
23:52.09Leedsragh
23:52.10Leedsargh
23:52.34Leedsjust realised that broken speaker means no DVD in my room as well as no TV
23:53.33Leedsanyway...
23:54.10LeedsI tell you... the Watford Tescos is the best 24-hour shop I've seen in this country...
23:54.59gregj:/
