05:23.22Leedsso I've been arguing with my bank and phone company here this afternoon...  I've developed a new, and apparently effective, method of dealing with customer service people.
05:24.40Leedsin order to pay my phone bill over the phone or online, I need a password to 'protect my information'.  I know the amount, I know my phone number, I know my credit card number - I do not want any information at all from them.  If they actually had a working phone system, they would know I was calling from the phone whose bill I want to pay, but apparently the phone company is incapable of delivering caller ID to its own call centre
05:25.31Leedsanyway, the new method is to call up, to tell them up front that I don't know my password, and to offer to put the phone down when they ask for it... they go ahead and ask for it anyway, I put the phone down, call back, get a different person in the call centre...
05:27.16Leedsafter about 4 tries, I get a person with a brain who is capable of doing more than following the script on her screen and who realises that if a) my password isn't the default, which is my ID number, b) I don't remember changing it and c) I'm obviously a foreigner, I may have signed up with my foreign passport rather than my HK ID card - which would mean my password was the first 6 digits of my passport number
05:28.18Leedsthe system accepts the number, the bill is paid, everybody is happy
05:33.35Leedsanyway, conclusion is to be polite, but firm, and that there are intelligent people in call centres, although you may have to work a bit to get through to one

12:36.22wethrinThat's because the link breaks
12:36.49gw280trousers_: ?
12:36.55wethringw!
12:36.57niv_one_threeright
12:37.05gw280wethrin: turns out may balls are dull as fuck
12:37.05niv_one_threehwat can I do to fix this?
12:37.25wethrinOh - summer balls. What happened? Or didn't happen?

12:40.52morsingwethrin: When are your parents coming over?

12:52.40trousers_morsing: Howdy.
12:53.03trousers_gw280: What kind of things do Cambridge like for an applicant?
12:53.25gw280trousers_: intelligence, apparently
12:53.30trousers_gw280: I've decided to apply there when the time comes, and want to be prepared.
12:53.45gw280to be honest, it's very hard to prepare for a cambridge interview
12:55.05trousers_gw280: What kinds of things did they inquire about and did you specifically choose your college?
12:55.30gw280yes, I chose corpus
12:55.35gw280and they ask you stuff about discrete maths
12:55.40gw280amongst other stuff.
12:55.48gw280but it varies from interviewer to interviewer
12:56.09trousers_Okay, cheers.
12:56.12gw280also bear in mind that a standard offer from Churchill will involve STEP
12:56.17gw280and a standard offer from Caius will involve AEA
12:56.48gw280if you want to pass a cambridge interview for compsci, you need to be on top form for maths
12:56.55trousers_Would you recommend applying to Corpus Christi or not?
12:57.07gw280it's a small college
12:57.11gw280up to you
12:57.12trousers_I'm considering natural sciences.

12:58.08gw280trousers_: you're doing AS levels aren't you?
12:58.24wethrinmorsing: No - you just mentioned the place to stay, so I was wondering if you found out how much it cost
12:58.27wethringw280: Rubbish!
12:59.03morsinggw280: Hello

13:43.08trousers_gw280: Not doing AS yet.
13:43.14trousers_Just finishing off GCSEs, currently.
13:43.18trousers_But thinking ahead.
13:43.57gw280trousers_: you can't say "physics is nice" after having done GCSE
13:45.07trousers_I am perfectly entitled to...
13:45.23gw280trousers_: GCSE physics isn't physics.
13:45.28trousers_Considering that education is not exclusively limited to GCSE.
13:45.33trousers_I am aware.

20:48.31Ch0HagI'm surprised anyone had it.
20:49.02Ch0Hagyeah you've been greylisted.
20:49.07boudiccasi used to serve a lot of books in the #bookz channel over on undernet, so I've still got loads of digitised books
20:49.16Ch0HagNifty.
20:49.24Ch0Hag:)
20:49.29boudiccasnp :)
20:49.40Ch0HagI haven't been on undernet in aeons.
20:49.53Ch0HagIn fact ... *checks age* ... nearly a decade.

20:50.35boudiccasCh0Hag; you don't run ubuntu do you?
20:50.44Ch0HagNot personally.
20:50.57Ch0HagClients and family members do though.
20:51.22boudiccasah, i just wanted to ask a ubuntu question. like ... 'how do you install kde?'
20:51.39Ch0Hagapt-get install kde
20:52.00boudiccasand that will pull down the stable version from the repos will it?
20:52.08Ch0HagAs far as I'm aware.

20:54.39boudiccasCh0Hag; will it provide a login screen in place of its usual log straight into gnome?
20:55.45Ch0HagI don't know.
20:56.08Ch0HagYou can't run gdm and kdm, you'll have to choose, but either dm can start either desktop.
20:56.25boudiccask, thanks, i'll ask in #ubuntu then
20:56.33Ch0HagYou either need to reconfigure gdm not to log in automatically or replace it with kdm.
20:57.29boudiccasi think that i'll let my friend ask in #ubuntu that way she'll learn and be able to go to the places that they say :)
20:57.41boudiccasthanks anyway
21:01.18Ch0HagGot that book.
21:01.20Ch0HagCheers.

21:05.49Ch0HagOh that's a whole other story. I'm just listing digital ones.
21:06.01Ch0HagConsidering that the library is all of 30 seconds walk away, I have rather a lot.
21:06.05boudiccasI read recipes the same way I read science fiction. I get to the end and think, "Well, that's not going to happen."
21:06.05Ch0HagDuring the day at least.
21:06.30clive-hI like cooking

21:07.27Ch0HagUsually it involved a frying pan or a wok.
21:07.59clive-hI like roasted food
21:08.12clive-hand it's relatively healthy
21:08.15Ch0HagAye. Too much effort to do regularly though.
21:08.55clive-hI'm tempted to do crispy duck tomorrow
21:09.31Ch0HagAlso, I have a major problem making food.
21:09.48Ch0HagThere are too many people here and none make decent food themselves.
