09:19.54Leedsah, so not really a 'hard' NAS as much as a little PC with lots of drives in it
09:20.03mindbendrI've got a question if anybody can help;
09:20.06mindbendrI have a problem with Overland Arcvault 48 LTO 4 tape storage, when I try to access it with  mt or mtx, it says input / output error. in the kernel messages at boot, there are SCSI  errors indicated that it tries to negoiate the bandwith/speed and gives parity errors. Is  there a way to fix the problem that I think the SCSI card is causing?
09:20.33mindbendrthe SCSI card is working with some other tape devices
09:21.09rhowe_Leeds: Isn't that what most NAS boxes are? :)
09:21.37Leedsyes and no :-)

09:55.03wethrinneeds a new one
09:56.53Leedsbilarh_: for what it's worth, I just spoke to my estate agent in London and he reckoned prices in London were holding up relatively well against the national fall
09:58.22bilarh_leeds: turkey wanting to abolish christmas?
09:59.29rhowe_popey: Yep
09:59.32LeedsI was asking for a valuation, for a visa application - a new tenent has moved in today, and I'm not planning to sell any time soon
09:59.52BlaptoI'm sure turkeys hate Christmas
10:00.00AndyMillarLeeds: they'll fall eventually
10:00.05AndyMillarbut for the moment, it's stable
10:00.50bilarh_andymillar: is it? the halifax index is down almost 10% on a year on year basis
10:01.04bilarh_note, not using the 3-month average year on year index that they report in the media
10:01.42bilarh_that means that on an "average house" (i know there isn't such a thing), you would be sitting on a 18k paper loss since last year
10:01.50Leedsbilarh_: the point being made was that things in London are more stable than the national figures
10:02.51wethrinUp here, they're not falling too much. But it wasn't so overpriced to start with
10:03.19zaargi bought a 24-inch iMac. it's my first ever mac.
10:04.15j0nrcan anyone in here explain difference between setting up vnc where you either log into an existing session, or start a new one?
10:04.17bilarh_leeds: that will change soon :)
10:04.27Leedsbilarh_: oh, that's quite possible
10:04.37bilarh_j0nr: you mean using xdm?
10:04.47j0nri am not sure...do i?
10:05.14bilarh_j0nr: do you mean that when you connect to vnc, you want to be presented with "username + password" prompt?
10:05.29bilarh_j0nr: that does authentication against /etc/passwd (or whatever) rather than .vncpasswd?
10:05.34j0nrbilarh_: basically i want to set up vnc capabilities on a server at home but there seems to be many different ways to do it and i'm not sure which is best for me
10:06.10antiphaseLEarn how to do what you want using SSH then be done with it ;)
10:06.10AndyMillarbilarh_: rental prices, they're not changing :(
10:06.21bilarh_leeds: transaction volumes are hugely down, the for sale stock is increasing rapidly, people can't get huge mortgages any more etc etc... there's only one way for prices from here
10:06.25j0nri'm on ubuntu, and as far as i know, there is a vncserver already installed, i.e. you can just go and 'enable' remote desktop in the menu
10:06.36Leedsbilarh_: I don't deny that for a second
10:06.39bilarh_andymillar: so what, my rent is about 60% of what an IO mortgage would be on the house i live in :)
10:06.40AndyMillarmainly because so many people will be on buy-to-let
10:06.50AndyMillarand their mortgage repayments won't be changing
10:07.18j0nrbilarh_: is /etc/passwd a better option than .vncpasswd?
10:07.24Leedsthe rent on my place is up something like 7% year-on-year
10:07.27bilarh_j0nr: ah in that case, unless you want to do desktop sharing, i'd just type "vncpasswd" at the prompt first and then type "vncserver". you should be able to connect with vncviewer after that
10:07.28antiphaseThat just means all the pikey buy-to-let bastards that drove the prices up will go bankrupt and normal people will be able to afford houses again
10:07.53bilarh_antiphase for president :)
10:08.02Leedsand indeed, my mortgage hasn't significantly changed, apart from the 1% or so which changes as the interest rate does
10:08.06Leedsuh, 5% or so
10:08.12j0nrbilarh_:i am currently ssh'd into the box, can i enable it from there? cannot do X forwarding
10:08.25Leedsantiphase: I bought, lived in the place for 5 years, then emigrated and put it up for rent...
10:08.28bilarh_j0nr: yeah you don't need x forwarding for vnc
10:09.05j0nrbilarh_: no but to enable it, the only way i know is to go to the gui menu and check the box...which obviously i cant do from here
10:09.14bilarh_andymillar: what a landlords mortgage payment is bears little correlation to how much rent he can charge, i think
10:09.15xteddypeeks at the palantir, then check some notes... paws around... hmm, looks like no.
10:09.21bilarh_j0nr: type vncserver
10:09.24j0nrbut setting vncpasswd and vncserver will enable it will it?
10:09.34j0nrbilarh_: ok will try it out...thanks!!
10:10.37Leedsvncpasswd will set a password... vncserver will start a headless session
10:11.11j0nrbilarh_: ok this is where i got previously confused....vncpasswd and vncserver say command not found, i.e. not installed... what is installed then? As I know if i was there i could go through the menus and enable remote desktop and it would work...so something is already installed.
10:11.47Leedsthat's a very different question
10:11.47bilarh_j0nr: ah, i think the ubuntu desktop sharing works differently... it's not vncserver as such, I believe, but I can't remember what it's called either
10:12.17j0nrbilarh_: ok so i could ignore that and install a vncserver of my choice, say tightvncserver
10:12.20j0nr?
10:12.24bilarh_j0nr: become root, type  apt-get install vnc4server
10:12.30bilarh_j0nr: yeah could do that :)
10:12.49j0nrbilarh_: see...many different options...but do they all do the same thing?
10:13.13bilarh_j0nr: apt-get install vnc4server will install the vnc4server package, i believe it probably comes with a client too
10:13.46j0nrbilarh_: ok will try it out... thanks again!!
10:14.54AndyMillarbilarh_: xdmcp?
10:15.24bilarh_andymillar: ah yeah that's what i maent :P
10:15.30bilarh_j0nr: no problem
10:15.53bilarh_actually, vnc works rather well nowadays imo
10:16.08bilarh_i use vnc through inetd and xdcmp
10:16.38bilarh_only problem with that is that you can't set the desired resolution of your session, so i've ended up listening on three different ports with different resolution settings
10:16.51LeedsI use it over ssh over the internet, daily
10:17.18bilarh_leeds: yeah it's quite cool... my only gripe is that the compression of it sucks... unless i use ssh -C it's unusable
10:17.47Leedspretty usable for me
10:17.57zaargi prefer xrdp
10:18.03zaargit's essentially a wrapper for vnc though
10:18.14Leedsit's possible that the tightvnc built-in tunnel is doing ssh compression
10:20.39Leedsalso worth noting that you can do no-password login by copying the vncpasswd file from the server to the client
10:24.57j0nrok...how about this...I am ssh'd into one bax....there is another box on the same lan that I have been setting this vncserver up on. Is it possible to vnc this second box?
10:25.19j0nrI have ssh'd and also created a tunnel thru to this second box (i think!)
10:26.52j0nrgoing thru one box into the other...if you see what i mean
10:27.41Leedssure, you can do that
10:28.04Leedsyou only need one ssh connection, because you can tunnel from one machine via another to a third
10:28.39Leedsthe tightvnc viewer has built-in support... you just do "vncviewer -via sshablemachine vncmachine[:0]"
10:28.47j0nrin putty i connect using the address of the server....then i added a tunnel forwarding the vnc port to the ip addy of the third machine...
10:28.57Leedsthe :0 is optional, may be different, depending on your setup
10:29.01Leedsputty?
10:29.18j0nrbare in mind i am on a windows box here and have to open a vnc viewer separately
10:29.34BlaptoPutty does port fowarding
10:30.04j0nryeah i know...wondering if i have it set up correctly... forwarding local port 5900 to ip.of.third.machine:5900
10:30.26j0nrthen open vnc viewer and enter localhost:1 ?
10:31.35j0nrbut doesnt quite work
10:44.46bilarh_localhost:0
10:44.50bilarh_5901 is :1
10:45.47bilarh_j0nr: also try telnet to port 5900 on your local machine and see if it connects (even the windows telnet client should support this afaik)
10:48.33BlaptoIf it's vista you have to install telnet, which caught me out last week
10:52.29j0nrbilarh_: hmm think I am confusing things a bit...trying to set it up to use xdmcp
10:52.52j0nrnow i cant connect to it from the local machine
10:55.35bilarh_j0nr: hrm.. now i'm confused... do you *want* to use xdmcp or not? :)
