10:45.47ChoHagI have a CSV with a column in the format "[0-9]+[0-9]+" which Excel helpfully converts irreversibly into a date.

11:50.58mindbendrHi
11:51.32kjshi
12:28.21ChoHagWhat the hell is wrong with people? The fact that nobody answered the phone is probably an indication that NOBODY IS THERE.
12:29.20wethrinHm?
12:29.34wethrinI think there's more to this than you just said...
12:30.05ChoHagHe phoned three times. On the third time I picked up the call group and he asked "Can I speak to one of the DBAs?"
12:30.15wethrinAh.
12:30.19wethrin"No. Bye."
12:30.24ChoHagI told him that if any were here, they would have answered the phone.

13:26.05ChoHagSome developer.
13:30.49AndyMillarah
13:34.27ChoHagAah managers. (Paraphrased) "It's pointless having this meeting all together because we don't have enough time to get everything done, but we'll continue to do it anyway for a few weeks without splitting it up."
13:40.54wethrinChoHag: Does your company have *any* idea what they're doing?
13:42.49AndyMillarwethrin: they have managers, they must do
13:48.37dick_turpinYes we do :-P

14:10.47ChoHagwethrin: Managing.
14:12.02ChoHagThe windows admin just said it would be a bad idea for the developers to each have their own (virtual) Linux machine. Despite developing for a Linux web server.
14:12.17wethrinDude, WTF?
14:12.21wethrinWhat's his reasoning?
14:12.42dick_turpinControl
14:12.53wethrinPah
14:14.03ChoHagThey should do stuff on a server so it is available when they leave.
14:14.10wethrinerm
14:14.47ChoHagYes.
14:15.09dick_turpinIrreplacable
14:16.54mindbendrwell the virtual servers are not available when it's needed for the other then
14:16.56mindbendrit's strange.
14:17.13mindbendrbut
14:17.19mindbendrin my company, the things are worse
14:17.32mindbendrthey install another virtual server for each service
14:17.44wethrinWhat's wrong with that?
14:18.03wethrinKeeping services separate is a good idea
14:18.06mindbendrthere's the local dns server 256Mb mem allocated for each service
14:18.18mindbendrand you end up monitoring hundred of servers
14:18.24mindbendrand maintaining them
14:18.30wethrinYou mean, Nagios ends up monitoring hundres of servers
14:19.41mindbendrit's not just nagios
14:19.43ChoHagAre they running a fully gnomed-up redhat?
14:19.45mindbendrbackup etc
14:19.49mindbendrChoHag: yeah
14:20.04wethrinClearly you need a more flexible backup script :)
14:20.05mindbendrfor instance
14:20.20mindbendri said i need a place to generate vpn keys
14:20.29mindbendrthe guy went oh lets install a virtual machine
14:21.18mindbendrwethrin: the backup situation is complicated here because the tape software doesn't cope nice with ctime/hardlinks on linux
14:21.35wethrintar!
14:21.44mindbendrwethrin: so we run rsnapshot and the commercial backup software on the files twice
14:22.01mindbendrin a way.
14:22.04wethrinUgh. There are better ways of doing it...
14:22.20mindbendrwethrin: if you wanna backup the folders that rsnapshot creates, how do you do that
14:22.24mindbendrto the tape
14:22.31mindbendrif you wanna go with a specific commercial software
14:22.48mindbendrwhenever you create a hard link, it updates the ctime on the inode
14:22.59mindbendryou end up having the ctime changed on every link eventually.
14:25.06antiphaseDon't use hard links then
14:25.28antiphaseUse the incremental or differential facility of your commercial backup system
14:25.46antiphasei.e. Do backups with the backup software :P
14:56.20*** join/#gllug sabinef72 (n=sabinef7@ns.popipo.fr)
15:02.47mindbendrantiphase: yeah but having them on the disk storage is an advantage that the devs don't wanna get rid off
15:02.56mindbendras having them on the tape at the same time
15:03.41mindbendrso i backup the large dirs with the commercial software individually with its native client incrementally
15:05.01antiphaseStaged backups?
15:05.51mindbendrrsnapshot backups everything with hardlinks and the commercial software backups the latest rsnapshot folder excluding the large dirs and it backups those large folders incrementally with its native client
15:06.31mindbendrso it backups those large folders twice incrementally as a result
15:08.14antiphaseSo your commercial software can't do staged backups where the most recent backups are kept on disk and moved to tape later for archiving
15:08.44antiphasewhich is the normal approach if you need faster access to recent backups for recovery

17:01.28mindbendrI'm transferring some files to a NAS box
17:01.31mindbendrtar cpf - * | pv | ( cd /mnt/exernalHD/; tar xpf - )
17:01.42mindbendri could transfer 1.30 GB in 20 minutes

23:14.45toshiba510cdti am running debian gnu/linux on ancient P133 MHz laptop. i do not run X and whenever i insert my Linksys WPC11 ver3  pcmcia wireless card (prism2 chipset) my laptop screen displays the message "wifi0: prism2_interrupt: ev=0xffff" ad infinitum and can not issue any commands or anything. it does not matter if i switch to tty2. that message effectively blocks me from issuing any commands
