11:15.53ext4_doubton a FRESH ubuntu 9.10 install would there be a problem if i format  /    /usr    /var  as  ext4   but have  /home as ext3?  i mean, has anyone here done that and did not suffer any performance problems or stability issues??
11:16.55AndyMillarext4_doubt: that should be fine :)
11:17.11ext4_doubthave YOU done it?
11:17.58AndyMillarno, I actually run my /home as ext3 ontop of lvm ontop of luks/dm_crypt instead :)
11:18.17AndyMillarif you partition yiou
11:18.39AndyMillarif you partition your disk properly, you'll have no trouble at all (and no problem) with / being ext4 and /home being ext3

13:49.36PcSettGreetings - forgive my BIG smile, remembering how to get here was quite a feat for me. :)
13:49.47AndyMillar:-)
13:49.50DiscordianUKGood afternoon
13:51.35PcSettHi again and thank you. I'll sit, wait and watch for words I understand - I'm patient! ;-)
13:52.04DiscordianUKLol
13:52.32DiscordianUKWell it's still mostly linux here
13:54.41PcSettNow THAT I understand. As I am and have been for some years now  - about Suze 10 time? I'm running Debian Lenny on 64bit right now.
13:54.57DiscordianUKis running Fedora 11
13:56.11PcSettI installed that distro last week and it was wonderful. I'd have kept it if I could have figured out how to get rid of the omnipresent US dictionary!
13:56.36DiscordianUKheh
13:58.19DiscordianUKI have old PCs so still 32 bit
13:59.52PcSetti'm happy to relate that I return a little of my debt to the creators of Linux, etc, by utilising the ancient skills of the reading room for non-English speakers in Europe. A bit. but it helps, I understand.  My reactions are slow (I'm 75) so I've just read that last bit. My kit was 32-bit when bought, but I learned from Debian Fora that Lennie 64 bit would run - and it did!
14:01.41DiscordianUKMy desktop box does 64 bit but not the laptop
14:02.41PcSettMy stroke-knackered hand debars the use of a lap-top (I'm happy to say).
14:03.33DiscordianUKMy feet are knackered through diabetic necropathy but I do find the laptop useful
14:04.36DiscordianUKIt never leaves the house though
14:05.14PcSettNow that sounds like a good description of windoze - but as my legs aren't up to much either I probably share a frustration with you in not being able to attend GLLUG meets.
14:05.46DiscordianUKNot been to one in around 5 years
14:06.32PcSettExcuse me a moment - my SWMBO has just entered my office - with tea. Must stop for a while!
14:06.42DiscordianUKSure
14:17.23PcSettHi again - cuppa to hand, nice crisp apple too. Now, about the ability to speak to one and other across the old Smoke. i'm thinking how useful this is, especially in promoting the use of Linux, etc. :)
14:18.31DiscordianUKOr even further
14:19.28PcSettWell yeah - as a lifelong trade unionist and activist, I agree!;-)
14:19.37DiscordianUKhas just had a bowl of soup
14:20.38DiscordianUKI had a long history as a trade unionist/socialist activist
14:21.36PcSettOK - what game - mine was print?
14:21.56DiscordianUKLocal government, IT
14:22.58DiscordianUKI remdember hot metal print though
14:23.41PcSettYup, useful guys/guyesses on may an occasion - especially in '72. Blimey, that's a while ago! And I've just read your last line - I've got  a 30 point Gill Bold N atop my tower.
14:24.06DiscordianUKHeh
14:25.13PcSettMy dream is to visit the old composing room set up in Ironbridge and set type by hand in the OLD WAY.
14:25.14DiscordianUKI nearly got into print IT at somewhere that was going from hot metal to a system hosted on a PDP-11
14:25.37DiscordianUKBut I did local government instead
14:26.50DiscordianUKI remember going round the hot metal shops

14:27.56PcSettThis is going to bore some of these younkers out of their heads, but I can recall going for an interview when I worked for a hot metal printers in Worcester to e brand-new film-setters in Caerphilly. A great leap - but still quite  few years until I was handling output from digitised processes.
14:28.35DiscordianUKThis was circa 78-79
14:30.16PcSettYeah - I ended up in the reading room - Head Reader, me. VERY proud of it too. Utter, absolute boss of all I surveyed. Quite useful when you're FoC too!
14:30.32DiscordianUKLol
14:31.05DiscordianUKTiring work that
14:31.13AndyMillarcpufreak: have you uploaded antiphase's confession? :-)
14:31.50DiscordianUKconfession?
14:32.17antiphaseHa ha
14:33.57AndyMillarDiscordianUK: antiphase left early and made a rather revealing confession
14:36.27DiscordianUKOh
14:36.41PcSettMore, more!
14:40.19PcSettAh well - I'd better go. I have much appreciated these contacts today and will attempt to remake them another day. Be well, take care, byee

15:32.00cityOfLightshi all, anyone alive here?
15:33.04teatime|cityOfLights: no, I terminal in from meatspace
15:33.25cityOfLightshmm
15:33.55cityOfLightsok, I am teaching kids programing. they will get a linux netbook
15:34.27cityOfLightshow can I demonstrate their ability to change the OS as they can't do in a windows pc?
15:36.02teatime|cityOfLights: as in you want to teach them to install a different OS?
15:36.57cityOfLightsteatime|: No, I need to present a good argument to use linux
15:37.23cityOfLightswell I just wnat them to see they can do something COOL they can't do in windows
15:37.33antiphaseAnything wrong with dual-boot?
15:38.00cityOfLightshi antiphase, so long since I was here...
15:38.10teatime|if you have to fool users with bling to get them into your way of thinking and onto your system, you are no worse than SCO or MS
15:38.27cityOfLightsno no no
15:38.31teatime|or Apple
15:39.11cityOfLightswhen the kids signed up to this program they get 20 leassons and a netbook
15:39.34cityOfLightsto make it affordable it was decided to install linux on the netbooks
15:39.34teatime|to do what on the netbooks?
15:39.40teatime|ah right
15:39.41cityOfLightsas they will use kturtle
15:40.01cityOfLightsto understand basic geometry and algorithems
15:41.27cityOfLightsso obviusly the first thing kids ask when they see their brand new laptop is "why aint it running windows"
15:41.42cityOfLightsand the argument of $$ doens stick with them
15:41.47teatime|and you say "because windows is for suckers and the elderly"
15:42.35cityOfLightsNO this is a wrong approch
15:43.16cityOfLightsI want them to understand that open source means they can take part in the software they run
15:43.28cityOfLightsthus they will want to learn how to write code...
15:45.26teatime|I dunno. I would maybe say that it comes with the tools to write code
15:46.36AndyMillarcityOfLights: teach them kernel hacking ;)
15:46.48cityOfLightso come on andy
15:47.11AndyMillarhmm, how old kids?
15:47.22cityOfLights11-10
15:47.39teatime|I was messing around with an amiga A500+ when I was 11
15:47.49cityOfLightsme 2
15:47.50teatime|your kids are getting younger?
15:48.11cityOfLightsmaybe multi desktops
15:50.02AndyMillarhmm, i wonder how hard it'd be to code a gnome widgit
15:50.05AndyMillarwidget*
15:52.19AndyMillaras that'd be a very visual and rewarding experience
16:02.08cityOfLightsright
16:02.10cityOfLights10x
