07:52.18Mohanmorning
07:52.26Leedsno!
08:10.50ChoHagUnfortunately it is.
08:10.57ChoHagThankfully this [working] week's last.

08:53.00jason_ukfsnmorning all
08:53.08ChoHagBah. Losers.
08:53.22ChoHag<me> I would like to do <X> in emacs.
08:53.28Leedshey jason_ukfsn
08:53.45ChoHag<them> You could run emacs on a tty and then <X> wouldn't even be possible, thus solving your problem.
08:53.50jason_ukfsnLeeds, how's life?
08:54.02Leedsnot too bad - you?
08:54.29jason_ukfsnbusy. I've been writing temporary interfaces to new broadband suppliers
08:55.28LeedsI've been writing facebook stuff and toys for Android
08:56.39jason_ukfsnwell, the stuff I'm writing is only going to be used for a month or 2 as I am getting someone else to write a new ordering and management system for all of UKFSN's services. I just don't have the time or energy available to do it myself.
08:57.21jason_ukfsnSo has the "freeze" in HK passed?
08:57.29Leedsfreeze?
08:57.43jason_ukfsna while ago you reported a "cold weather warning"
08:58.01Leedsoh, yeah, it warmed up again - I'm back in short sleeves, day and night :)
08:59.34ChoHagjason_ukfsn: Are C&W actually good these days?
09:01.27jason_ukfsnChoHag, yes they are. They have a very good network. Pretty much all of the reports of problems I have seen were specific to ISPs who took a virtual pipe solution from them and then failed to purchase enough capacity - essentially duplicating the BTW business model. I'm not doing that. I'm having them terminate customer connections directly onto the Internet so there are no such issues.
09:07.23ChoHagWhat was the other thing?
09:07.46ChoHagOh, yes, can't you take over from BT anyway? :)
09:09.11jason_ukfsnLOL ChoHag, I really would not want to. I prefer to have an ethical business model ;)
09:09.44ChoHagIn this day and age?
09:11.08zeroXtenmorning
09:11.26bilarhmorn
09:11.59Leedsjason_ukfsn: you'll never end up running a multinational investment bank, with that attitude
09:12.37ChoHagQuick. antiphase is coming. Everyone look busy.
09:12.53bilarhfiddles with something
09:13.01ChoHagNot like that!
09:15.33jason_ukfsnLeeds, oddly enough I'd rather have a business that makes a real profit rather than relying upon dishonest accounting and government bail outs
09:15.53Leedsand that, folks, is why they call him 'honest Jason'

09:16.02Leedsand 'poor Jason' :P
09:16.57jason_ukfsnLOL Leeds, you are very right ;)
09:17.18ChoHagThat same reason is why I've never seriously entertained the idea of going into business for myself.
09:24.00jason_ukfsnI've been tempted to go back to contracting at times but really I prefer to be able to support my family with my time more than money.
09:37.53ChoHagThat may be the way I'll go.
09:38.03ChoHagBut while my family is small, the money's more useful.

11:22.24AndyMillarsodding EDF
11:22.45DiscordianUKwhy what have they done?
11:23.04AndyMillarpower cut
11:23.07antiphaseProbaly gone on strike, being Frogs
11:23.14AndyMillarhas no power at home :(
11:23.28DiscordianUKOh whereabouts is that?
11:23.33AndyMillarcovent garden, london
11:24.05DiscordianUKThat's gonna impact xmas shopping a bit then
11:24.35AndyMillarit's not everywhere, only some shops and flats
11:24.43DiscordianUKAhhh
11:25.32DiscordianUKWe had a week's worth of power cuts at home when some yoofs darwinated themselves stealing power cables from a substation
11:27.34ArmandNow, THAT is retard-fail powaa!
11:28.07DiscordianUK6 hours on, 3 hours off for a week
11:28.16wethrinJust like the 1970s, eh? :)
11:28.35DiscordianUKyeah
11:28.47AndyMillartbh, i wouldn't mind that so much
11:28.47ArmandThat's ok.. with the UK's power infrastruture.. we can expect it all again soon. ;)
11:32.16ChoHagStealing power cables?
11:32.20ChoHagWtf were they going to do with them?
11:32.29AndyMillarsell as copper
11:33.44DiscordianUKThat's my guess too
11:37.07ChoHagIs copper that dear?
11:37.18wethrinYes
11:38.26ChoHag"As consumption in India and China increases, copper supplies are becoming scarcer."
11:38.32ChoHagI think we know the answer to that conundrum.
11:40.03wethrinKill them all?
11:41.18ChoHagExactly.
11:41.29wethrinand then steal their copper
11:41.38ChoHagWe're pretty good at the whole invade-other-countries-to-steal-their-resources thing.
11:41.52antiphaseUse aloominum instead
11:44.48wethrinDoesn't necessarily work as well
11:44.56wethrinGive the aloo to the poor people
11:45.04ChoHagAccording to the source of all knowledge there are plenty of other metals more abundant than copper.
11:45.24antiphaseEveryone should use iron transformer windings
11:46.11antiphaseWe'll run out of gallium first anyway
11:46.40wethrinEh. They'll just have to start mining landfills to recover metals
11:47.25antiphaseWe're all going to die in 2012 anyway
11:48.12wethrinAhh yes. Was that the subject of the recent cinematic documentary?
11:52.16ChoHagwethrin: That'll be fun.
11:57.39ArmandNothing to do with documentaries.. it's a new part of the olympics.. People hunting.

14:32.59jason_ukfsnArg! I hate the mobile mechanic!
14:33.53wethrinDid you mobile not get fixed, then?
14:48.23ChoHagYou prefer your plumbers bolted down?
14:49.12ChoHagHmm. Does a plumber count as a mechanic?
14:59.24jason_ukfsnthe plumber I had no problem with but that was 2 weeks ago and he did the job very well (completely stripped the boiler to fix a pilot igniting problem)
14:59.48jason_ukfsnThe mobile car mechanic who came at 2:00 today I am not happy with.
14:59.57ChoHagOh don't remind me.
15:00.00ChoHagWe need a new boiler.
15:00.11ChoHagLuckily I have a father, but I still have to buy the boiler.
15:00.35jason_ukfsnMy car wont start. He says it's the starter motor that's the problem but he doesn't have one. OK, says I, I can get one from that shop 30 meters over that way. He wont fit it.
15:00.35ChoHagOh crap. Meeting.
15:00.49ChoHagSod him. Get a new one.
15:00.52ChoHagOr fit it yourself.
15:01.05jason_ukfsnDon't buy a Valiant. Apparently the parts cost 2.5x the cost of a new one!
15:03.04jason_ukfsnFitting starter motor on Astra diesel isn't straight forward any more. Have to jack up car, remove other bits, etc.
15:05.17z00daxgetting a new starter motor into a ford mondeo was a near nightmare, plenty of stuff had to come out on the way in, and thankfully the guy managed to put all the bits back in again - except 2 screws.
15:05.32z00dax( which he sort of claimed where already on the table before he started )
15:12.36jason_ukfsnThankfully the shop I can buy it from is able to fit it however I need to get the car around to the back of the shop to do this which means turning it around and pushing it about 500 meters. I'd do it now except there is a school here and lots of people driving to pick up kids, etc. Also pushing the car on my own isn't something I look forward to. My brother is coming over about 4.30 to lend a hand.
15:14.32wethrinPushing a car is quite easy, unless there's uphill
15:21.32jason_ukfsnPushing the car isn't the problem in itself. It's doing so while turning the car 180 degrees without causing a riot by delaying everyone else and no causing myself a heart attack. I'm not really very fit
15:22.00wethrinoh, hmm
15:24.20AndyMillarjason_ukfsn: so, you've got an hour to go to the pub :)
15:37.00jason_ukfsnAndyMillar, no, it's an hour to continue working through the large number of UKFSN customers who want moving to the C&W LLU product I offered to them on Wednesday.
15:45.30kjs_l
15:50.07ChoHagI ought to add myself to that list.
15:50.13ChoHagJason doesn't have enough to do...
15:51.35jason_ukfsnProcessing them is easy and doesn't really cost any time. It's responding to all the email queries from people who did not read either of the 2 emails I sent out properly (or at all!) that are causing me time issues
15:51.46ChoHagHeh.
15:51.49LeedsUKFSN: "Offers dial-up modem and dual ISDN ISP services, including web space with PHP and MySQL access."
15:51.50ChoHagWhat? Read stuff?
15:52.08ChoHagThis is the internet age. The age of instant global, usually written, communication.
15:52.14ChoHagYou don't surely expect people to read stuff?
15:52.37jason_ukfsnLeeds, yes those are all offered too. Unfortunately google appears to be stuck on them.
15:52.48Leedsindeed :)
15:52.58Leedsdo BT still offer ISDN lines?
15:53.21jason_ukfsnOh yes. ISDN is still a very lucrative business for BT
15:53.46ChoHagIncidentally how does your /30 offer 2 IPs but the /29 offers 5?
15:56.01jason_ukfsnWith any block of IPs you loose 2 of them for the network and broadcast addresses. On a block of 4 that leaves 2 usable. On a /29 it's 6 but most people discount one of those for the router. Should do the same for a /30 too
15:56.30ChoHagOh good. I hoped that was it and not something weird.
15:59.35ChoHagSo what sort of questions are they asking?
15:59.44ChoHagThose emails have pretty much covered everything I can think of.
16:01.14haliwe have a few ISDN's from BT, they still do isdn drops to all les100 circuits for monitoring the mux'
16:21.13*** join/#gllug DiscordianUK (n=ch@fedora/DiscordianUK)
16:21.48jason_ukfsnChoHag, most of the emails are asking the questions which are answered in the email I sent out yesterday. Perhaps it was just too long for them to be able to read or I didn't write it clearly enough.
16:22.59jason_ukfsnI've just spent 15 minutes on the phone to a customer explaining to him that I cannot check where his emails are going because he doesn't use our SMTP server. Some people really should not use computers.
16:23.08rhoweChoHag: You can of course do some funky stuff with proxyarp and pretend to have a larger subnet, in order to use all 8 addresses of a /29 for internet-reachable hosts :)
16:23.52AndyMillarwonders if he just voided the warranty of a few k's of kit
