08:38.54morsingjason_ukfsn!
08:39.15jason_ukfsnmorning
08:39.40morsingjason_ukfsn: How's the kids?
08:40.08jason_ukfsnOK. How's you?
08:41.44wethrinhallo peeps!
08:42.23morsingjason_ukfsn: Good, thanks
08:42.25morsingwethrin!
09:15.31z00daxcheck it!
09:25.26morsingjason_ukfsn: What's dual line broadband?
09:25.31morsingz00dax: Beer
09:25.46z00daxmorsing: i have whiskey here
09:26.46morsingNice
09:26.49morsingAnd haggis?
09:29.16z00daxnope
09:29.27morsing:-/
09:33.08Dread_how would i adjust the volume via command line on ubuntu?
09:34.13morsingThere's a Gnome command IIRC
09:34.20morsinggnome-volume or something
09:35.09wethringnome-volume-control brings up the Gnome volume controller GUI
09:35.39Dread_yeh i want to actively raise and lower the volume with a command...
09:35.52morsingwethrin: Hmmm... There's a command line thing...
09:37.09jason_ukfsnmorsing, "dual line" broadband is a new phrase to me. It's meaningless without some context but at a guess I suppose it might be a description dreamed up by someone who doesn't know how to say "bonded adsl".
09:37.36morsingjason_ukfsn: Under BROADBAND:
09:37.36morsinghttp://aaisp.net.uk/
09:37.55morsingSayd high availability though, so you're probably right
09:37.57morsingsays
09:38.12wethrinhttp://aaisp.net.uk/broadband-extraline.html
09:38.28Dread_i thought dual line broadband *was* bonded adsl?
09:38.40wethrinhttp://aaisp.net.uk/kb-broadband-bonding.html
09:39.40jason_ukfsnAh, A&A have a slightly different angle on this. They are selling a service using different networks (BT and Be LLU) in order to provide some resilience against network failure.
09:40.15morsingOk
09:40.29jason_ukfsnIt is bonded ADSL but using separate suppliers. I'm not aware of anyone else offering this. We, and everyone else I am aware of, bond multiple lines from the same network supplier.
09:41.41LeedsA&A are somewhat specialised
09:42.01Dread_I've heard good things about A&A
09:43.37jason_ukfsnA&A are very good if rather expensive. Certainly if you have persistent problems with your broadband service they are likely to be the best ISP to switch to as their systems are designed to harass BT in a practically autistic manner to get things done.
09:44.40morsingADSL sucks
09:44.56morsingjason_ukfsn: What's the relationship between up/down speed?
09:45.04morsingDoes one limit the other?
09:45.21morsingAnnex M?
09:46.36jason_ukfsnAnnex M *can* reduce download speed a little to improve upload speed (so can Annex A but not as much) but whether it will and to what extent is very line specific.
09:46.48Dread_jason_ukfsn, yeah i agree, thats what i thought. i personally use Be, i think they're really the only decent ISP for heavy users while still being fairly priced
09:47.06jason_ukfsnADSL may suck but it's a hell of a lot better than paying £15,000 for a leased line!
09:47.12morsingI know
09:47.32haliyou can get a 10meg leased line connection for about 400 quid a month these days
09:47.37halifrom someone like colt
09:47.45Dread_i'm on a leased line atm, 100meg, but i'm at work :P
09:47.53morsingYou can get slow SDSL for a couple of hundred a month
09:48.14halileased line install can be quite dear though, if you dont have a mux already
09:48.30morsingOk, they're ignoring people on IRC
09:51.34Dread_so where is everyone then?
09:51.46wethrindid you start asking where random people are again?

09:57.11Leedsbloody know-it-all website
09:57.22Dread_isnt it terrible
09:58.28bilarh_total awesomness, cpan is so good
09:58.38bilarh_i wish there was a package manager in linux that was as clever as cpan
09:59.34wethrincpan is tedious on first install
09:59.39wethrinand then it decided to bum out on me
09:59.42wethrinso sod that
10:00.23Dread_whats so awesome about it? (not being a perl dev, i've never used it)
10:01.04wethrinyou can install Perl modules
10:01.13wethrinand it'll pull down the dependencies for you
10:01.14Dread_well, that i know
10:02.05Dread_just wondering why its better than any package managers for linux
10:02.31bilarh_it's just nice
10:02.34bilarh_and it's written in perl
10:02.43bilarh_and the search understands perl regexps

10:03.01bilarh_it's probably no better than any other package manager in reality
10:03.07Dread_fair enough
10:03.08bilarh_but, it gives me a hard on because it's perl :)
10:03.17Dread_heh
10:03.31halimost perl modules are available in rpmforge anyway :)
10:03.31Dread_re-code apt or yum or something in perl then :P
10:03.41halibeats using lousy cpan
10:04.40mikejwhallo!
10:07.20Dread_hey mikejw
10:11.09jason_ukfsnapt or yum are only as good for perl as the number of modules that have been packages up for them.
10:11.14Dread_wishes there was a greggs near by
10:11.28morsingGreggs--
10:11.31jason_ukfsnI try to use apt where I can but often fall back to cpan in order to have something that actually works.
10:12.52ChoHagDo you use CPAN directly or convert to a deb first?
10:12.54Dread_nearest Greggs is 1.4 miles away according to Google Maps
10:13.01ChoHagDread_: Too close.
10:13.16Dread_Too far away!
10:13.30Dread_where i come from theres almost one on every corner
10:16.04jason_ukfsnI use cpan directly. I've no real interest in turning everything into a distro package.
10:19.46ChoHagIs that why you left?
10:21.12bilarh_well, i couldn't find Expect.pm in a package for example
10:21.15bilarh_CPAN to the rescue
10:21.38bilarh_when i say i couldn't find expect.pm as a package, i meant one that installs :)
10:23.20cpufreakbilarh_: apt-get install libexpect-perl
10:23.33bilarh_cpufreak: apt doesn't work all that well on centos derivatives
10:23.45cpufreakrpm -ivh debian.rpm
10:24.08bilarh_apparently debian.rpm has not been authorized for use at this site :(
10:25.27cpufreaklame
10:31.33mikejwI've had some fun with cpan2dist
10:35.18morsingHow do I transfer my VM number to a new BT line?

10:52.13morsingDoes anyone know if Virgin Medie Cable would let me take my phone number with me to BT?
10:52.40ArmandPossible... I think it's PITA though.
10:52.55jason_ukfsnyou can port a number away from VM yes
10:56.17morsingArmand: Just completed the on-lin eorder form and it says it'll happen automatically
10:56.32morsingjason_ukfsn: At what point should I cancel the VM line?
10:57.37jason_ukfsnI don't know. I suspect you should do it only after the new line is in place and the number successfully ported out.
10:58.04morsingOk
