04:01.51boudiccashi folks, how can i tell if a printer is supported by centos? i'm going to look at some printers later on in town and i want to know if centos supports it before i buy it
06:25.26ChoHaglinuxprinting.org
07:21.17halii usually go for big brand and not the latest model
07:21.22haliHp/epson etc
07:21.30halitbh, almost always HP
07:32.31bilarhget one that understands postscript
07:32.54haliwell, isn't PCL more then way to go these days? :)
07:33.03bilarhI'm old school
07:33.10bilarhi don't trust all that new technology
07:33.14haliyeah i do me' docs in TeX
07:33.32bilarhboudiccas: and I'd make sure they throw a couple of extra ribbons in as well, they're expensive and hard to get hold of nowadays
07:45.26wethrinhali: LaTeX too modern for you? :)
07:46.05haliif it's not good enough for Knuth it's not good enough for me!

11:36.47dick_turpinAfternoon all
11:38.37ArmandDafternoon, dick_turpin!
11:55.42dick_turpinbilarh: Put that young lad down and get in here
11:58.18bilarhoi you
12:01.30dick_turpinbilarh: Sorry did I put you off your reach around?
12:52.34boudiccasdoes anyone know of a good uptodate site for seeing if  a printer is linux compatible. i'm specifically looking at Brother DCP197c, dell 1100, or Canon IP3600 ? i've looked at http://www.openprinting.org/printers and none of the printers are listed there
12:55.59boudiccasdick_turpin, can you put your salesman hat on and help me out please?
12:59.21antiphaseHP or Epson is the best bet as already said I think
12:59.28antiphaseNot some Winbollox
13:00.34boudiccasthose are the only makes in the shop, so thats what i'm looking at :(
13:00.42antiphaseGet it online for cheeper

13:03.35dick_turpinI know my really old Canon BJC (250?) worked with pretty much every Linux distro so I reckon you'd be OK with a Canon however as antiphase says HP are pretty well supported
13:04.22antiphaseI had one of those, about 10 years ago
13:05.47PcSettHi Peeps - anyone know of a snailmail address for Demon, the ISP, to which I may send a communication with some hope of it being read?
13:08.08ArmandO_O
13:08.24ArmandYou're probably better off with smoke signals..
13:08.55PcSettYeah - my experience!
13:10.19PcSettI've probabl;y breached soem protocol or other in diving in with this request, bt
13:10.56PcSettooo, blurry fingers ... but I've been driven to distraction
13:12.13antiphaseVote with your wallet
13:13.28PcSettHi antiphase - yup, did that. Now with BT, but oh dear, I just want to clear the Demon stuff and I can't ŧrust them to respond to anything.
13:14.21PcSettIE - If I pay their last invoice, I fear another will just follow in a month.
13:15.04ArmandRespond with a threat of legal action.. if you've already cancelled the contract.
13:15.05antiphasePhone them then
13:15.43wethrinOh. Demon. Their accounting department are a bunch of shysters
13:15.46wethrinAvoid like the plague
13:16.03wethrinTook them 6 months to actually cancel my account properly
13:16.17wethrinand it involved a talk with a collection agency
13:16.36wethrinunsurprisingly, it all got resolved when I explained to the agency precicely *why* I didn't owe Demon anything
13:16.45PcSettAh - yes. Three calls in all, in each case rendering me a gibbering racist nut case! By the way, it seems to me wethrin's right too. Thanks for a seeming moral suport!
13:16.49dick_turpinwethrin: They sound nice :-)
13:17.04wethrinthe agency were quite pleasant to deal with
13:17.24dick_turpinNo Demons accounts department
13:18.45PcSettI have a feeling that any listing of my experiences is only going to call forth a chorus of Me toos!
13:19.19ArmandNot me.. I don't have much trouble dealing with shit-bag companies.
13:20.03PcSettI'm very willing to learn ...
13:22.01PcSettForgive me - wrong place/time. I'll just keep watching.
13:37.22boudiccasif a printer is listed as wireless, then it should still work without wireless, yes? is my thinking correct??
13:38.29wethrinit'll still need a mains lead
13:38.42wethrinit'll most likely still have a USB port, though
13:40.02boudiccasright, thanks wethrin , i think i'll get one from amazon, the HP Deskjet F4580 All-in-One Printer
13:40.53boudiccaslisted at http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-Deskjet-F4580-All-in-One-Printer/dp/B002OHD9GE/ref=dp_ob_title_ce. can anyone think of any negatives as to why i shouldnt get it please?
13:42.34wethrinSmall capacity cartridges?
13:43.18boudiccasis that a guess or prior knowledge?
13:43.33wethrinI read the customer reviews :)
13:43.38boudiccasah right
13:43.44boudiccasi missed that bit
13:44.08antiphaseThe cartridge that comes with the thing is almost certain to run out in 5 minutes
13:44.16antiphasebut that's normal for stinkjets
13:47.30bilarhif you're going inkjet, i'd recommend getting something that has cheap cartridges
13:47.44boudiccasi had a hp deskjet 320 which lasted me for years until it got irremidably jammed, poor thing
13:47.45bilarhyou'll pay more for the printer itself, but at least you wont be robbed blind every time you need to buy ink
13:48.08boudiccasbilarh, any good models that you know of please?
13:48.21bilarhno :(
13:48.31bilarhwe have some kind of canon one at home, but we only use it with the mac
13:49.37boudiccasright, i'm going for the HP Deskjet F4580 All-in-One Printer, as i have need of a scanner too. just 44.97 from amazon

14:17.55boudiccasbilarh, no, its got to be printed out and posted to milton keynes so that they receive it by 14/10/10. its a bind really but it has to be done
14:20.53bilarhboudiccas: ah :(
14:25.24boudiccashence the frantic scurrying round to get a working printer.
14:30.28bilarhthat's insane, though, isn't it? :(
14:30.35bilarhit's almost 2011
14:40.31boudiccasyes, but if i dont send it in then i dont get the marks and the credit, so i'll have just wasted a couple of months. ergo, i do the essay, print it out and send it in

21:41.34AVerTVi have a Pentium III  750 MHz  256MB RAM running Ubuntu lucid. Everything worked ok but it was very slow running Gnome so i installed fluxbox and now everything works ok except my AverMedia AVerTV Volar Black HD (A850) which is a TDT USB device. It actually kinda works under gnome but the picture is a bit jerky and i lose audio within 20 seconds of running kaffeine. Can anyone help me?

21:42.48AVerTVon a fluxbox  session dmesg shows no errors but Kaffeine says: "device not connected"
