05:01.19ptw23recently realised he has been attending the furthest LUG from London in the world. Going to be a long hike back.
05:20.45ptw23Hello.
05:23.43Leedswellington?
05:24.15ptw23Pretty close :) Dunedin. IIRC it's pretty close though
05:25.25Leedswent to NZ a couple of years ago - only the northern half of North Island though
05:25.54ptw23Using 'pretty close' in two different ways probably wasn't helpful, but you get the gist.
05:26.18Leedsyeah
05:26.30ptw23Cool - travelling around or straight to NZ?
05:26.51Leedsjust did a manic week there, stayed in 5 places over 6 nights
05:30.16ptw23That does sound pretty manic - see much?
05:30.31Leedssure, lots!
05:30.42Leedsgot something similar planned for this Christmas in Japan :)
05:32.41ptw23nice! straight there and back from UK or do you get to stop off a bit on the way?
05:34.52Leedsah, I don't live in the UK...
05:36.01LeedsNZ and UK are both about the same distance away from Hong Kong...
05:36.20ptw23thinks that given he isn't either, he could probably have guessed.
05:37.06ptw23That would make more sense :) 12000 miles is a long way for 6 days...
05:37.22Leedswe tend to do mostly asia (and sometimes pac), with Europe trips every couple of years
05:37.47Leedsthat is, *I* go back to the UK once or twice a year, but I go traveling with my local gf other times
05:39.20Leedsas I said, got a week in Japan booked for Christmas - 2 days in Tokyo, 2 days in and around Nagano, 2 days in Kyoto, with a lot of time on trains in between... and looking at maybe Malaysia for CNY in February
05:40.06ptw23Imagine HK would be a good base for that distribution of travelling
05:40.39Leedsit is, but it's not that cheap - HK isn't a cheap airport
05:43.42Leedsone thing that's missing in Asia generally is the low-cost airline thing, and the competition which drives it - cheap flights on a cheap airline to Malaysia will still cost us almost 150 quid each
05:44.30ptw23that's a shame - how do Tokyo / KL compare? I've only been to Hong Kong going through on AirNZ, which is probably more economical than most ways (once you write off the first 800GBP in AKL-LHR fares) compare? i have only been to Hong Kong
05:45.34LeedsKL has Air Asia, which is openly copying the Easyjet/Ryan Air thing, but is hampered by fuel and airport fees - that almost-150 quid was with them
05:46.19ptw23(hmm... apparently I'm doomed to strange repetitions today)
05:46.31ptw23Actually, they were flying right to Christchurch for a while
05:46.33LeedsTokyo is also very expensive - I paid over 500 quid for two of us to get there for Christmas, and that was booking back in August
05:46.43Leedsyeah, they've canceled some of their longer-haul flights
05:47.24Leedswe flew via Singapore, on Singapore Air - who have some decent prices, and are a nice full-service airline
05:47.56Leedsit's also a nice place to stop over for a couple of hours (grab a shower and coffee in the airport) or even a day - we went to Universal Studios there on the way back to HK :)
05:50.40ptw23Wow! How many hours in the air each way? Re Singapore Air - I've been consistently recommended Singapore, Emirates or NZ long-haul. When you're in that 30-40 hour window, the extra costs seems well worth it.
05:52.23Leedswe've done Emirates to Bangkok - nowhere further
05:52.32Leedsto Singapore from here is 4, 4.5 hours
05:54.08Leedsthen another, oh, 10-11 hours
05:55.08ptw23Sounds like fun :) Still have to visit Singapore - I agree that stopovers are a good way to get an extra holiday, often underrated as an option. That's quite a distance really - London to HK is about 12, if I remember right?
05:56.18Leedsyup
05:57.12LeedsSingapore is cool to visit, wouldn't want to live there - as my ex-flatmate did, and a mate's brother from the UK is about to do
05:57.21Leedshotels can be pretty expensive, like HK and Japan
05:58.22LeedsI've got good at sniffing out travel deals over the past couple of years - like Accor (parent company of Novotel, Ibis, Mercure, etc.) regularly have 40% off, or buy 2 nights get 1 free sales
06:01.18ptw23Good to know - that was something I noticed going to Hong Kong; difficult to find economical accommodation, so that would make a substantial difference to an overall trip cost I expect
06:03.04ptw23Afraid I'll have to run, but good to chat - hope you have a good rest of afternoon :)
06:03.07Leedsit does, although flight deals tend to be a lot harder to find
06:03.20Leedsthanks, have a good whatever-time-of-day too :)
