11:48.46crillyHey :)
12:07.31crillySo do all of you guys live in GL?
12:26.13hali_no
12:26.19hali_about half the people here do
12:51.07morsingcrilly: Most are more sensible than that

13:09.16crillyhaha :)
13:09.22crillyI live in Aldershot.
13:12.02crillyI work in GL, though.
13:12.29crillyDo you guys have regular meets, or just as-and-when organised meets?
13:20.17dick_turpinmorsing: >*<
13:31.02morsingcrilly: No meets - GLLUG died in 2005
13:32.54crillyReally? But the website was recently updated for a meet this year?
13:36.27morsinglol :)  Ok...
13:37.15morsingAh, the pre-FOSDEM drink... Yeah, ok
13:47.18crillySo other than that, it's pretty dead?
14:03.23dick_turpinGLLUG is very much alive for anyone will to get off their fat ass and actually support it by turning up. Sadly the Lug is still top heavy with people who just want to bitch and moan because it doesn't conform to what or how THEY feel it should work. They're a bit like Woolworths shoppers, nobody shopped there but moaned like fook when it closed down.
14:03.37dick_turpinwilling
14:08.13morsingcrilly: Yeah, GLLUG is dead
14:08.35morsingEven wethrin can't deny it anymore
14:08.48dick_turpinWe shall see
14:08.55morsing'twas fun back in the old days though, regular tech-meets and social meets
14:09.07morsingOn a monthly basis
14:10.00dick_turpinactually you are right, thinking about it. The old GLLUG is dead, there are new kids on the block "Long Live GLLUG"
14:14.05crillyHmm, I see. Not sure how a LUG should "work", given that it's just a mailing list and sitting in a pub once a week getting pissed.
14:14.11crillyHow are you managing to get this wrong?
14:14.14crilly:P
14:15.17morsingcrilly: No, it's not. GLLUG isn't a mailing list. GLLUG is monthly technical talks and regular install fests. And on top regular social meetings
14:18.45crillymorsing: Aaaah OK. That's a lot more serious than the LUGs up north then (I'm originally from Liverpool).
14:18.47dick_turpinmorsing: What a crock of bollocks. Lug's are about people. They have nothing to do with install fests or technical talks. The days of only a few people understanding the black arts of installing Linux are well and truly over so you don't need install fests any more.
14:19.01crillyI can see why that would be more difficult to keep going. I would be happy to do talks though
14:19.27crillyI agree with dick_turpin to a degree, even though he is a dick.
14:19.53dick_turpincrilly: It's why the old Lug died. They used to have tech talks where you was executed if you dared speak during the lecture. They was of interest to about four people
14:21.33crillyYeah I'll be honest and say I've never been to a LUG meet like that. At the Chester LUG we did have the odd talk (lukcily, the founder of the LUG was a professor at Chester Uni, so he had access to the resources needed, and for free).
14:22.06crillyBut it was mostly, as you say, about people and getting them involved, being social and just having a laugh whilst kind of setting the context around Linux
14:22.14crillyOr technology in general.
14:25.09dick_turpinMost of the Lugs I've been to it's about chatting with the off Linux tit bit thrown in. True there has been talks but tbh I think the last one Wolves Lug had was four years ago. With Internet access, forums, wiki's and social media there's no real need any more.
14:25.23dick_turpins/off/odd
14:35.13crillyThat's the thing, social media is great, but it has killed off a lot of great initiatives and desire to now get down the pub and actually interact. it's pretty sad.

14:42.09morsingcrilly: Where do you live?
14:43.09crillymorsing: Aldershot. I work in Hayes in GL.
14:43.34morsingcrilly: To be honest, I was quite active back 8-10 years ago, but I was living in London and was new to the city and didn't know anyone. Now, it takes me two hours to get in, I have friends and family where I live, and am so busy in my spare time I just can't justify going to a GLLUG social
14:43.41morsingcrilly: I used to live in Hayes :)
14:43.52crillymorsing: Sorry about that :(
14:44.02crillyAre you OK? How many times have you been stabbed?
14:44.07crilly:P
14:44.10morsingDon't be sorry, it's awesome! Wouldn't give it up for anything :)
14:44.23morsingAh, sorry about living in Hayes, yeah lol :)
14:44.28crillyhaha yeah :)
14:44.58morsingwethrin: When are you going through London next?
16:39.19*** join/#gllug dick_turpin (~peter@host217-34-163-30.in-addr.btopenworld.com)
16:45.54yaMattcrilly, yeah, I aim for meets every 6 weeks or so
16:46.39gw280moomoo
16:49.16crillyyaMatt: :)
16:49.36yaMattkind of got to put the next one together though#
16:50.01yaMattnot sure whether to tap up Google again because they've been irritatingly quiet, go for a popular pub, or go back to Mozilla
16:55.16crillyHow close to Hayes do you meet?
16:55.27crillyI could come from work and then make my way back to Hayes and drive home.
16:55.41yaMattI am to be pretty central teetering between west and east london a bit to keep it as fair as I can
16:56.05yaMattI don't fancy doing it in someone's living room if they live right at the end of the metropolitan line ;)
16:56.48crillyHeh!
16:57.17yaMattso we 'just' had an afterwork one at the end of Jan for FOSDEM
16:57.38yaMattmeaning I intend the next one to be a full weekend thing
16:58.01crillyNice! I work Saturdays, but I would be happy to come down the Sunday.
16:58.11crillySo are you the LUG founder then, yaMatt?
16:58.42yaMattheh, definitely not founder, I think I was 2 when it was founded ;)
16:58.54dick_turpinThe Lug rejuvenater would be a better title
16:58.57yaMattbut I've stepped in to organise events for the last few months
16:59.11yaMattREJUVINATOR! I love it
16:59.20yaMattlike a dictator but with more action
16:59.38dick_turpinI salute you and worship the new order
16:59.44crillyAnd more Rejuvination
16:59.45yaMattactually that's a good point, haven't done a Sunday one, that's a good idea
16:59.53crillyIt is a good idea.
17:00.03crillyI am a good idea. I like my Sunday idea. You should buy into it.
17:00.09dick_turpinIt cant be that good, Matt had it?
17:00.30crillyI am not Matt, I am Mike.
17:00.55yaMattheheh
17:02.02crillyBut seriously, I'm up for attending more if the peeps are decent.
17:02.20dick_turpinStarts with an M, plus all M's look the same to me. :-)
17:03.50dick_turpincrilly: If you go others will go as nobody likes to be left out of a thriving group. If at each meet Matt 'ups' the numbers by one or two stands to reason the attendance will grow.
17:04.39yaMattcrilly, yeah, I'm hoping I can get some people to do small individual project talks this time around, should be fun
17:04.55yaMattbig corporate talks are *yawn*
17:06.11crillyAh OK, OK. I am currently using my PDT time (Personal Dev Time) in work to learn MongoDB, so I don't mind doing a brief intro to that?
17:06.51crillyIf that's the kind of stuff you mean?
17:10.54crillyUnless you mean much more low level stuff, like... erm... I dunno. You tell me :P
17:18.08crillyfeels he has killed the conversation
17:24.07*** part/#gllug dick_turpin (~peter@host217-34-163-30.in-addr.btopenworld.com)
17:37.00crillypokes yaMatt
18:22.03yaMattcrilly, na, that is good too :)
18:28.19crillyCool :)

18:29.31crillyyaMatt: What kind of dates do you have in mind then? Within the nexy three months?
18:41.49yaMattoh yeah, easily within the next 3 months
18:41.57yaMattI'd like to do it this month but it might be a bit soon
18:42.12yaMattdefinitely by mid April
19:53.46crillyNice one. I will hang out in here so let me know when you've decided on a date :)

21:10.58crillyMmmmmm, nice beefy hypervisor coming my way soon I hope
21:11.30yaMattESX?
21:33.04crillyProbably KVM actually, yaMatt
21:33.26crillyFriend has agreed to sell me a £300 mainboard for £80 with a case and 700W PSU :P
21:33.39crillyhttp://www.supermicro.co.uk/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DTN_.cfm?IPMI=O -- I'm going to push a Hex core into it and 12GB of RAM for now.
21:33.45crillyAnd the SSD from this laptop.
21:33.59yaMattcrilly, nice
21:34.01crillyThat'll do for now. It can take 288GB of RAM - I'll get there slowly :P
21:34.40yaMattheheh
21:34.53crillySo do you work in London then, yaMatt?
21:35.02yaMattI do, in Vauxhall
21:35.44yaMattdid you say you worked in West london?
21:36.14crillyYeah, Greater London, in Hayes.
21:37.02ArmandHayes!!
21:37.05ArmandOh geez..
21:37.44yaMattnot an area I'm familiar with
21:37.50crillyLucky you.
21:37.55ArmandNot an area you want to be... :P
21:38.16crillyIndeed! :D
21:38.26ArmandI spent too many years there.
21:38.50ArmandI'm living in West Drayton now, but not for much longer.
21:39.04crillyI moved to Aldershot from a nice area up north.
21:39.30ArmandOOoohhh.. you only *work* in Hayes?
21:40.00crillyOh yes. I wouldn;t live there. I might be a scouser, bt I'm a posh scouser with standards :P
21:40.22ArmandIndeedy.. it's a shithole, to be blunt. :P
21:41.53crillyI feel sorry for some of the lads in work that live there. It's expensive living there for fuck all property wise and a shitty area.
21:45.13crillyOh well.
21:49.47crillySo I am going to have to work out the fencing in KVM if I am to setup some clusters
