15:38.53PaylHi guys, I wonder why FPC (Free Pascal Compiler, www.freepascal.org ) was not allowed to be in GSoC? It tried to get into it I believe in 2011 and once more before. Why was it rejected?
15:41.00ollyPayl: many more orgs apply than can be accepted
15:41.15ollyit's often more a case of not being accepted than being rejected
15:41.48PaylI'm not sure what it does mean really. You have to register your project fast in order to get accepted?
15:42.09PaylIsn't that rather stupid in fact?
15:42.10*** join/#gsoc licnep_ (uid4387@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-zdsfsweihosnwygo)
15:42.40anth_xPayl: google only accepts a certain number of projects every year. far more than that apply. the folks who run GSoC have to make some difficult decisions.
15:43.27ollywhen you send in the application (so long as it is in the application period) doesn't make a difference
15:43.47PaylI believe they have to, but a lot of less interesting projects are allowed, and FPC being rejected when it's most important open Pascal compiler.
15:43.48anth_xthey also run a meeting in IRC every year to give feedback to any orgs who weren't accepted. you might ask the FPC folks if they attended, and what feedback they got.
15:44.17*** part/#gsoc licnep_ (uid4387@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-zdsfsweihosnwygo)
15:44.29ollyfeedback is available as to why a project wasn't accepted after accepted orgs are announced, though I'm not sure if you'll get it so long after the fact
15:44.45ollyyeah, what anth_x said
15:44.57Paylalso, why are projects rejected?
15:45.04olly!numapps
15:45.05gsocbotolly: "numapps" is In 2013, 177 of 417 mentoring orgs were accepted; 4144 students submitted 5999 proposals, of which 1192 were accepted. In 2012, 180 of 406 orgs and 1212 of 6685 proposals (by 4258 students) were accepted. In 2011, 175 of 417 orgs and 1116 of 5474 proposals (by 3731 students) were accepted. In 2010, 151 of 367 orgs and 1026 of 5539 propsals (by 3464 students) were accepted.
15:45.05Paylis that important to keep low count of projects?
15:45.26ollybecause gsoc is run by essentially one person at google
15:45.42ollyand the more orgs there are, the more work there is to do
15:45.47anth_xnot to mention the more money to hand out.
15:46.02ollyas you can see, there are typically more than twice as many org apps as are accepted
15:46.09anth_x(does the bot still know the one about google not being an ATM?)
15:46.15*** join/#gsoc andralex (~andralex@c-50-161-71-247.hsd1.ca.comcast.net)
15:46.29ollyanth_x: well, they could have the same number of slots and mentor summit places but more orgs
15:46.29Paylyeah, but i.e. hedgewars were allowed.
15:46.56Payland hedgewars are compiled by FPC, so it's more than weird.
15:47.03ollyi'd focus on how to make free pascal's org app better next time, rather than pointing at other orgs and pouting
15:47.23Paylwhat do you mean by making better?
15:47.27anth_xPayl: ask whoever did FPC's prior application(s) if they attended the meeting.
15:47.52Paylprobably should ask on mailing list, but right now i'm asking here :P
15:48.16Payli want to get some idea, because I was on FPC IRC, and they didn't believed too much in point to submit FPC to GSoC
15:48.20ollyif they didn't, look in the logs for the feedback for other orgs - a lot of it is quite general
15:48.24anth_xthe people who can tell you best why it wasn't accepted are the people who ran that application, provided they attended the meeting.
15:48.46*** join/#gsoc nlminhtl (~ignotus@triming-pact.volia.net)
15:48.52Payltrue, but i have no idea who was doing it.
15:48.58Payland if he is still FPC dev.
15:49.39*** join/#gsoc dranov (~dranov@188.26.209.82)
15:49.48anth_xhrm. that's unfortunate.
15:50.11Paylprobably i should still ask on FPC mailing list, which I'll probably do.
15:50.18anth_xregardless, if the FPC folks are discouraged by a rejection or two, tell them that's silly. plenty of orgs are rejected and then accepted in subsequent years.
15:50.52anth_xi started as admin for my org after the folks who ran it in 2008 got discouraged by a rejection and weren't going to bother resubmitting. we got in.
15:51.07ollyless than a minute with a search engine reveals that Felipe Monteiro de Carvalho applied in 2008
15:51.09ollyhttp://lists.freepascal.org/lists/fpc-devel/2008-March/013200.html
15:51.11anth_xwe were rejected again in 2012. i re-applied in 2013 and we got in. it happens.
15:51.17ollyand I know nothing about FPC...
15:51.33Paylolly, FPC is best opensource Pascal compiler
15:51.52Payland since GPC stoped being developed, probably the only bigger one that is opensource.
15:51.58ollyi mean, I found the info trivially without knowing who any FPC developers are
15:52.09anth_xolly: how'd you do that? it's like there's some company that runs a service that lets you type in terms and get relevant links back. who could run produce such a thing?
15:52.18Paylolly, seems like you were more lucky :P
15:52.34ollyi just searched for: fpc gsoc application
15:53.25Payli was looking for fpc gsoc before i believe.
15:53.37Paylbut i was looking why it was rejected :P
15:53.43ollythe feedback you see over and over is that the ideas list is very important, and getting a "vouch" from a previous gsoc org or a googler who knows your org helps
15:55.16anth_xPayl: i don't believe anyone here can tell you that. ask Felipe what feedback he got. reapply. read the docs, make a really good ideas page. consider looking over the logs of prior years rejected orgs meetings, if you want the best intel you can get (although it gets long)
15:55.30*** join/#gsoc lib_cat (~lhj@183.129.76.37)
15:55.37ollyfwiw, I think they are planning to accept more orgs in 2014, as it's the 10th year, so I'd encourage you to start gathering project ideas now and apply when the time comes
15:56.13anth_x(also, get a little bit lucky: even after weeding out orgs/apps with significant problems, they have to reject some number of orgs they'd like to take)
15:58.31PaylYeah, now I'm exlopring Lazarus Wiki a bit, probably will ask developers why was FPC rejected, thanks guys for helping me out :)

19:52.55Nightroseyes
19:53.00Nightrosewell
19:53.02Slurpeethis is via manually creating tasks and mass import

19:53.15Nightroseit was in hours

20:00.05Slurpeethat is always the only page to delete tasks
20:00.17NightroseSlurpee: hmm i don't see anything there - only on the list of all tasks at the top of the table

20:05.51Nightrosebulk was pretty frustrating for me :(

20:06.22Slurpeehow to add other mentors?
20:06.27Nightrosehad to manually sort it all out again
20:06.33Slurpeei've been searching documentation before I asked question on mailing list

20:08.30NightroseSlurpee: https://www.google-melange.com/gci/homepage/google/gci2013 has a register as a mentor link
20:08.38Nightroseand then they need to connect to your org
20:08.47Nightrosei don't remember how that part works exactly for the mentor
20:10.17SlurpeeNightrose, how many tasks is kde planning to submit by Monday?
20:10.32Nightrosei've got 68 now
20:10.40Nightrosesome lacking mentors so i can't publish them yet
