03:51.08terriDoes anyone know if there’s a way to export the student and mentor evals from the gsoc system?
03:51.31terriI’m trying to do my backups before Nov 15 as the reminder email said
03:59.18olly_terri: not looked yet but for melange I exported via a Firefox extension as MHTML or MAFF
04:00.14terriolly_: yeah, I might have to do that.  It looks like the mentor-written evals are on each student page, and that’s the only way to get them.
04:00.41terriolly_: and I can’t see the student-written evals for most of the org at all, only for the students where I was a backup mentor.  This is sad, I found that feedback really super useful.
04:00.55olly_Hmm
04:01.28olly_Not sure I've looked this year but as you say it was very useful
04:01.55terriah, no, found the student info!  just was looking at the wrong screen.
04:02.06olly_Oh cool
04:02.17terriIt’s on the “overview” tab, not midterm or final where I was looking.
04:02.39terriBut yeah, I think I’ll probably have to screen-scrape the whole thing for now.

04:54.34aman_d1996can we apply for multiple organisations in gsoc?
04:56.19olly_aman_d1996: yes, but quality beats quantity
04:56.56olly_And you can only be accepted for one
04:59.23aman_d1996olly: thanks..i m looking for it this time..but i have not yet understood the open source contribution culture
05:00.14aman_d1996olly: should i start from choosing an organisation and start working for it...like fixing a few bugs or so
05:00.43terriyes, choosing an organization and fixing a few bugs is a perfect way to start. :)
05:02.00aman_d1996terri: what if the organisation which i choose doesnt get selected this year...? then in that case what can be the scenario
05:02.18*** join/#gsoc vivekp (~vivek@unaffiliated/vivekp)
05:02.43terriaman_d1996: then you find another org to apply to, but you’ll come to that new org *way* stronger because you’ll have experience with a different open source project. :)
05:03.22territo be honest, it looks *great* if you’ve been able to fit in with more than one group, even if it means you’ll have to set up a new development environment.
05:03.45valorieamen
05:03.55valorieit looks good to us in KDE
05:04.11terrilooks good on your resume, too
05:04.31valorieand many students work with one org one year, and another the next
05:06.03aman_d1996seems awesome...i have been working with a startup as an intern for some past few months...but open source community interests me alot... :)
05:06.30valorieI find it awesome indeed
05:07.30olly_While different orgs have their differences, there's a lot in common and a lot of transferable skills
05:09.21*** join/#gsoc Tahir (~Tahir@202.69.11.20)
05:10.54terriyeah, things like “communicating via mailing lists” “reporting bugs well” “using version control” “working with a geographically distrubuted group of people” “following a coding standard” “making a good patch/pull request” — even if there’s slight differences in exactly how one group does these things, there’ll be a lot of overlap with what another group does.
05:11.42aman_d1996well ok thanks
05:12.38terridrat, my attempt to make an archive of the gsoc site has left my poor copy of firefox spinning.  I hope it’s still working and not traumatized by my data. ;)

19:34.06ovalseven8meflin: Do American students have 3 months free time in summer?
19:34.19meflindepends on the school
19:35.21PulkoMandyin most cases the GSoC dates won't perfectly align with the free time anyway
19:35.47PulkoMandyorgs expect students to be a little less available if they have exams or whatever - just be clear about it in your application and prepare your planning accordingly
19:35.49ovalseven8Thing is, I have exams during the GSoC time
19:37.19ovalseven8Which knowledge level should one have in programming?

19:37.49gsocbotovalseven8: "goodenough" is Am I good enough to be a student for GSoC? http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCStudentGuide/ch003_am-i-good-enough/
19:38.03PulkoMandyplease read the student guided :)

19:38.33ovalseven8PulkoMandy, I read it, but often there is a difference between the reality and how something "should be" ;)
19:39.16PulkoMandywell, the guide was written by the community, so more or less the same people you are talking to here. So that we don't have to answer the same questions over and over again
19:40.29PulkoMandybut, if you really want me to repeat: you can attempt GSoC with few knowledge of programming. The orgs are used to dealing with students, they know what to expect, and the mentors are here to help you. However, it seems important to me that you are able to communicate with the org and mentor and expose your problems
19:41.05PulkoMandyin the past we had some students with rather good programming skills, who stayed stuck for 2 or 3 weeks on a problem before asking for help, and that didn't work well
19:41.29PulkoMandywe had student with less skills but the motivation to learn and rework their code until it was accepted, and that works much better
19:41.54valorieamen to that, PulkoMandy
19:42.21valoriemuch of success is in attitude and work ethic + good communication
19:42.25ovalseven8PulkoMandy, Thanks! One can participate two times in GSoC, right?
19:42.41valoriefor KDE at least, we evaluate the student, not just the code
19:42.48PulkoMandyas a student, I don't know, the rules have changed since I was one
19:42.49valoriewe want to grow the KDE community
19:42.53PulkoMandyas a mentor, as many times as you want :)
19:43.02valorietwice as a student now, yes
