03:09.40r0bbySnow-Man: hey -- so I have strong opinions on this -- I believe that mentors need to at least have someone vouch for them -- last year I had people who were vouched for but otherwise not involved with our project but I ultimately relented and let them in -- this year however I'm being much stricter and having far better vetting.
03:11.13r0bbyWhat you should do instead is immediately divert and help onboard them to become contributors and reconsider them for next year -- odds of this happening is pretty slim -- they probably just want to mentor with little interest in doing work but let's assume good faith I guess
03:12.39r0bbyI helped to draft the policy on this for DIAL -- mostly learned everything i know from downey  :)
03:15.23r0bbyI personally don't do GCI for the glory or fame -- I do it because I find it worth all the effort -- just realizing that the kids DO genuinely appreciate our effort

03:58.01bshahis any other GCI organization getting email from totally random people wanting to mentor?
04:10.59r0bbybshah: pretty much all of us are getting randos approaching us to mentor and I've denied all of them but did exactly as I advised others to do: diverted and started the onboarding process

06:59.26FresoSnow-Man: I'm not accepting anyone as mentors I don't know to already be contributors to one of our projects (or otherwise active in the community).
07:00.14FresoAlso, the e-mails are not new to this year. I think we've gotten them for all of our three prior years too. Maybe there are more this year, but they're definitely not exclusive to this year.

07:27.55valoriewe've always gotten a few other years
07:28.07valoriebut it's really a *lot* this year in KDE
07:40.11Freso"I was a GCI 2017 mentor at Sugar Labs. I have a great knowledge about open source community." Great! … But why are you applying with us then, instead of with them again?
07:40.38FresoI feel like all but one of our "applicants" are also really untargeted.
07:41.07FresoI think they just write up the e-mail and then add in all the org. addresses as BCC's and hit send.
07:41.35FresoWell, I guess not BCC's, maybe they actually do take the time to copy/paste to 20 or how many we are this year mails.
07:45.06bshahI feel like this emails are coming from single university
07:45.22bshahI've seen at least 3 emails from same univesity address

07:48.48FresoWhich one? The latest one I've gotten is from an @gmail one.
07:49.12FresoAnd I currently at the MusicBrainz summit with a bunch of Indians, so I might want to ask them.
07:49.14FresoActually…
07:49.54Fresoiliekcomputers: ^ Any clue? Do *IT's suggest students to do GCI mentoring?
07:49.59*** join/#gsoc rsh7 (uid189998@musicbrainz/user/little-rsh)
07:50.36FresoDarnit it rsh7, I was just about to ping you too. But I guess you can't see the backscroll either. Maybe iliekcomputers can show you. :)
07:50.56bshahFreso: yeah, it's mostly IITs
07:51.06bshahwhich I totally find weird
07:51.59Freso(I learned yesterday that apparently each region of India has an IIT, NIT, *and* an IIIT.)
07:52.05bshahheh
07:52.18bshahFreso: you're in India atm? :D
07:52.24FresoNo, in Barcelona.
07:52.27bshahah okay
07:52.39Fresohttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/MusicBrainz_Summit/18#Attendees
07:53.00Freso7 Indian attendees.
07:53.21FresoAnd I think all are former GSoC student (this year or previous years).
07:53.47FresoYeah, 4 from this year, 3 from last year.
07:54.01bshahheh, all found same flight going to barcelona xXD
07:54.17FresoThey sneakily coordinated their invasion!
07:54.18rsh7Freso: whats up?
07:55.06bshahrsh7: we were wondering if IITs were suggesting students to become GCI mentors? Since I am not in IIT I would never know
07:55.24Fresorsh7: We're just wondering about the rise of people (which is mostly Indians, as also per our talk yesterday… though I can't remember if you were part of that) "applying" to be GCI mentors with org.s that they have no prior history with is possibly encouraged by the *ITs.
07:56.49rsh7Ah okay!
07:59.03rsh7Are iit's encouraging the students :o, i didnt know
07:59.33bshah... to be mentors xD
08:00.11bshahor maybe it is some LUG somewhere which advertised the GCI and people jumped on it or something
08:01.31bshahanyway... as r0bby said, no point in discussing this much, we better onboard them as contributors ;)
08:07.11iliekcomputersIt's almost definitely not the institutes
08:08.02iliekcomputersProbably just the students being overenthusiastic
08:08.26FresoYeah. I've tried to encourage them to get active in MetaBrainz when they write me and apply again next year. :)
08:09.04Freso(As it is though, UTC+0530 is already heavily represented at https://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Google_Code-in/2018#Mentors 🙈)

08:20.17r0bbyI feel as if the value placed on the certificate is a bit much
08:21.05r0bbyit's nice and all but it doesn't say anything...you could have reviewed a total of one task and get one -- which says litttle to nothing about your skills
08:27.48FresoYeah.
08:28.30FresoBut eh. Such is true of a lot of things in this modern world.

19:57.41downeyr0bby: the auto-generated certificate for BOINC projects, e.g. SETI@home, include the current amount of data processed. might be something that GCI certificates could do someday. Probably something for Robert_S or bluesomewhere to consider
