15:26.45downeyJust a few more hours :)
15:32.59anth_xEveryone got some coffee? Tea? Settled in?
15:36.01Mchow to you plan to choose an org ?
15:37.30anth_xI’m an org admin, so if we’re in, that part’s done for me. :-) But my general advice for prospective students:
15:39.04anth_xOnce the list is out (in a few hours), just read through and start checking out the projects’ self-description. When something sounds interesting, check out their ideas page for something that sounds like you’d like to/be able to work on.
15:39.14anth_xRepeat down the list. :-)
15:43.07anth_xIt can be a bit overwhelming because there are so many. If you start feeling that way, just do a light scan over the list of Orgs and pick a few to start with.
15:44.10anth_xMany students start just by looking for the names of any projects they already use. I think this is probably good advice, but I’m conflicted about it personally since that probably won’t be us for very many students. ;-)

16:01.38anth_xNot beyond that. Once the orgs are announced, take a closer look at the descriptions. I don’t think there’s *any* developer who’s skills fit equally well in all orgs.
16:02.11anth_xThe tags that orgs pick can be useful, although I don’t know what those look like in the new system.

19:27.18shubhamMc means what? software development rn
19:41.19shubhamdoes proposals and application are same thing here in GSoC?

19:45.09downeyEach org will ask for different information in your proposal ... so you need to check with them to see what they'd like!
19:51.51shubhamBTW rn i'm trying to shortlist orgs with my good language (excluding frameworks), so am i doing good or this is a bad way to shortlist orgs?
19:54.46Mcthere is no bad way : what you want is to end up with an org that uses the language you know and where you could help, so if your method ends up with that, it's a good method
19:55.35shubhamokay, mate

19:57.38Mcyou can look at their site, see if what they do relates to your interests, and if yes, try to play with it a bit to understand more what it's about, and if not, find something else

21:58.08Arthur_RainbowSorry, my bad. I meant that we had more people contacting us than I would have expected
21:58.40Arthur_RainbowIndeed, they are not formal application. They are people who come and speak with us, which is great, and ask question we didn't prepare, such as what is going to be important in their application

22:30.30Mcwe have an application process that requires two minor code contributions and that usually made the number of applicants passing that bar very low
22:43.23Arthur_RainbowI'm slightly surprised. I'd have thought inhetical to ask people to do free work to actually get a paid internship. At least work that is really useful to the project and not a simple test of skills.
23:06.10McArthur_Rainbow: and I would consider unethical to ask potential contributors to do useless work in a free software community, or ask contributors to review useless work… Apart from GSoC students, everyone around is a volunteer and forms what we see as a community, where the paid aspect of GSoC is just an enabler facilitating the onboarding of new community members (because "free time" is a comodity that is
23:06.12Mcdistributed quite unevenly) - And it *is* a test of skill: we have good first issues that are trivial, and if you are not motivated enough to clone, fix, commit, I'm not sure you'll be able to contribute for months
