Now, if I disconnect (or connect) a monitor nothing happens, so I go to run xrandr to check out the status, and at that point kscreen sets everything right. I don't actually make changes with xrandr; it just seems the act of listing the outputs somehow "rriggers" kscreen to do its thing.
