17:50.11 | cinix | Has anyone else had problems with color depth on X11? Some GTK applications fail to load images under certain conditions, but work fine when forwarded of SSH. I also find most SDL applications don't work correctly unless I force a bpp of 16. afaik X11 is configured for 16bpp, so I wouldn't expect that to be neccessary. |
17:51.53 | cinix | xdpyinfo says the default screen is 16bpp, and since it's operating over framebuffer X11 shouldn't have any control to change it anyways right? |
18:02.06 | ierk | but i can't get the g_file_storage to work. on an spitz. it worked fine on a c7x0 |

22:45.33 | Interrobang | can any1 recommend a filesystem solution for SD cards in a Z? i want to use ext3 or reiserfs but they've locked up on me b4. i want something that can withstand abrupt removal without massive corruption and data loss |
22:51.03 | JustinP | Interrobang: abrupt removal is never a good idea |
22:52.01 | Interrobang | JustinP: i expect the device to eventualy lock up, and I may want to remove it regardless or at least reboot it (which would be the same as removal) |
22:52.34 | JustinP | well....a journalled FS would be your best bet for such a thing. ext3 is well supported on the Z |
22:52.56 | JustinP | I've never tried it on a card, though |
22:53.13 | JustinP | I just use FAT and unmount my card when I want to eject it |
22:53.17 | kellyh | Interrobang: why not just software eject/unmount it first before removing it? |
22:53.59 | Interrobang | kellyh: like i said, i expect the device to lock up eventually. that's when i'll need to force the issue |
22:54.37 | kellyh | Interrobang: maybe trying to get to the bottom of what is causing the lock up may be a better long term stratagy? |
22:56.05 | Interrobang | kellyh: regardless of the cause, once the problem occurs the issue of safe removal becomes relevant and damage will be done if one does not prepare in advance |
22:56.19 | kellyh | Interrobang: ther eis that. |
22:56.47 | kellyh | FAT seems to survive abrupt removals from my experience with removing it from machines before now |
22:57.15 | Interrobang | i'm looking for something suitable for use as a linux rootfs |
22:57.16 | kellyh | best journalled filesystem i've come across though has been XFS, but i don't think that'd be suitable for a Zaurus somehow |
22:58.26 | kellyh | Interrobang: ext2/ext3 is probably your best bet then. |
22:58.59 | Interrobang | kellyh: plz refer to the original question |
22:59.22 | JustinP | Interrobang: perhaps you should be trying to figure out why ext3 and reiser are locking up then |
22:59.28 | kellyh | Interrobang: yes, but there doesn't seem to be much other alternatives. |
22:59.30 | JustinP | Interrobang: there really are no other journalled FSes |
22:59.46 | JustinP | at least not known working on a Z |
23:00.00 | Interrobang | JustinP: what about not know |
23:00.16 | JustinP | I used to use ext2 on an SD card as root on my collie just fine |
23:00.28 | JustinP | it even crashed and could keep on working |
23:00.39 | JustinP | I'd just fsck it from my flash install every once in a while |
23:00.40 | kellyh | I used ext2/3 on my collie, without much issue |
23:00.58 | JustinP | ext3 ni a loopback file on a FAT card should also work fine |
23:01.02 | kellyh | tho i did switch to using CoreDump|afk's rom with cardfs, which seemed to work well too |
23:01.03 | Interrobang | JustinP: i've used ext2 on desktops b4 and it's very insidious abuot data loss. things just disappear quitely |
23:01.22 | JustinP | I use reiser at home |
23:01.40 | kellyh | I just stuck with XFS on my linux boxes at home |
23:01.51 | kellyh | very robust FS |
23:02.27 | JustinP | never tried it myself |
23:03.08 | kellyh | very fast and reliable i've found it, never failed to recover from crashes/power outages etc, at least not in my experience |
23:03.27 | kellyh | only downside is if it becomes full or has to delete a lot of files, gets a bit sluggish then |
23:03.29 | JustinP | reiser has never failed for me but I don't have many power outages.... |
23:04.17 | kellyh | JustinP: most of the power outages have been caused by electrics in the house tripping, rather than supply |
23:04.33 | JustinP | I don't get any of those either ;-) |
23:04.41 | JustinP | I had an earthquake the other day but no power outage |
23:04.52 | kellyh | did have a particularly irritating switch that in this heatwave recently here itd flake out and take out everything with it on the lan |
23:05.43 | kellyh | my old PC with XFS filesystems rebooted without issue, the old sparcstation with solaris on it wasn't quite so quick to recover |

23:13.10 | JustinP | I've done it plenty of times |
23:13.27 | JustinP | even had 2 laptops and a keyboard for a dektop on my lap at one point and was very confused/frustrated |
