13:57.43_hypnohello together, I have problem with tomcat and log4j configuration. I have a shared package which I put to /shared/lib. The classes in this package should log to a file using log4j so I put the log4j.jar also in the shared/lib folder and log4j.properties in shared/classes. My webapps use log4j too and have their own log4j.properties. When I start tomcat the initialization of log4j fails everytime

17:08.29solushmm, i have apache and tomcat installed on two separate machines, and i want to connect them with mod_jk
17:20.38tang^solus: easy enough to do since you specify the ip of your tomcat ajp listener in workers
17:29.52soluswell i thought so to, but i have to specify a bunch of dirs for my tomcat config-files
17:29.59solusand theyre local..
17:31.17tang^err? mod_jk or mod_jk2?
17:33.40tang^I ask because I don't have to specify anything for files and such and i'm using jk2
17:36.42solusim using jk
17:37.54tang^ahh, I'm not familiar with that version
17:38.15solusbut basically on the apache machine i should only need apache, mod_jk and the workers file?
17:38.27solusi think theyre pretty similar
17:39.31tang^yes
17:40.08tang^now that I think about it, the references to tomcat would be a list of the webapps available.  just to automate the updates
17:40.30tang^you could copy the files listed to your apache server and reference them locally, no?
17:45.23solusi think it works now..

21:05.26carbon60Does anyone know if there is functionality to have a request executed as the user by invoking Subject.doAs()?
21:05.53hellabot"pers" pasted "This is the printStackTrace" at http://www.hellaweb.com/hellabot/209
21:06.49persDoes someone have a clue why i get this exception?
21:11.26persis there anybody out there?
21:11.39jasonbpers: This exception looks as if the HTTP client already closed its end of the socket connection before Tomcat got around to writing to the socket.
21:12.35jasonbpers: This is often not really a problem.  A stack trace in the log does not exactly equate to a serious error.  Sometimes they're not serious, and are logged only because the author of the code that logs it didn't anticipate the condition, and didn't realize it would look so ugly in the log.
21:12.42persi'm running IE6.0
21:13.09jasonbDoes a request to this particular servlet or JSP take a long time to run?
21:13.52jasonbno.jconsult.database.products.web.gallery.ThumbnailServlet
21:14.16jasonbDoes that take like 30 seconds or more to run to completion?
21:14.24persnope. The servlet is getting an image thumbnail from a database table and sending the byte[] back to the stream
21:14.39persless than a second
21:14.48jasonbhmm.  Welp, I think the client is closing connection before it's actually done sending.
21:14.59jasonbMaybe a content-length mismatch?
21:15.42pershmmm. didn't think of that... going to set the content length

21:53.04ldoganyone here worked with jaas on tomcat?
21:53.58ldogim somewhat interested in using something like a modified jdbcrealm
21:54.38ldogI am wondering if the webapp can get the username that was passed
21:59.29jasonbWhich username?
22:05.07ldogjasonb: the username you log in with
22:05.15ldogi'd like to use basic authentication
22:05.52ldogi dont see anywhere in the tomcat jaas implementation a way to get a handle on the session
22:07.36jasonbThe tomcat jaas stuff was broken last time I tested it.
22:07.45jasonbIt almost works, but doesn't.
22:08.05ldogthat sucks. I just got tomcat working really well with eclipse
22:08.34ldogi'd like to move my company's java portal in that dev environment but i'll need a custom basic authentication
22:08.36jasonbI don't remember hearing of any fixes for it either.. although I suppose they could have fixed it.  Look at the modifications via viewcvs and see if it's been changed in the last, say, 5 months.
22:09.23ldogstrange that it could be broken for so long. even jrun gots this right
22:10.51jasonbWell, I think very few people who use Tomcat also tinker with JAAS.  *shrug*  But, yeah, they should either fix it or remove it.
22:11.33jasonbldog: I wrote about this in Tomcat: The Definitive Guide.  The text about it there (and other stuff) might help you.
22:11.51ldogyour an author?
22:12.14jasonbI'm co-author of Tomcat: The Definitive Guide (O'Reilly).
22:12.21ldogcool
22:12.52ldogso you think the jaas stuff is worth spending the time to fix?
22:13.06ldogtomcat's codebase looks huge.
22:13.48jasonbYes, Tomcat is pretty big now.  And, yeah, if you like JAAS, and if you're able to spend a little time debugging & fixing it, it's worth doing.
22:14.22*** join/#tomcat pmark (mark@dhcp97.nceas.ucsb.edu)
22:14.37jasonbThe guy who wrote Tomcat's JAAS stuff has moved on and left it behind (broken), and none of the other guys care to tinker with it, so it just stayed broken.
22:15.01jasonbRemy told me that at one point it did work, but I spent like a day or so trying to get it to work and it sure didn't.
22:15.20jasonbThere's also basically no docs for it.. how to set it up, how it all works, etc.  Without that, people don't bother with it.
22:18.42jasonbkill -3 pid ; sleep 1; tail -10000 /var/tomcat4/logs/catalina.out > /tmp/jvm-trace.txt
22:18.48jasonboops!  :)

22:21.48ldogmaybe it was an excerpt from your book

23:11.42ldoggood question. i thought i book marked it
23:11.50ldogi think i printed it out
23:11.52ldogjust a sec
23:13.40ldog24 hours later and its gone from the printer
23:13.50ldogswear to god, the savages in this office...
23:23.08ldogdid lots of googling last night, maybe it was just the server.xml file tho
