13:05.49MHSLNomad9941, try to download and use tomcat from tomcat website
13:09.40Nomad9941the binary works, but why the one which i installed with apt-get not?
13:12.59Nomad9941it must have something to do with configuration
13:24.01deebobecause the deb package is plain stupid
13:24.09deeboit spreads the installation all over for no reason
13:24.22deebojust use the package you get from the tomcat site

13:37.25MHSLNomad9941, use the one from tomcat website, there are many people having trouble with packaged tomcat
13:38.27kjetilkWorkI think it is important to realize that in many settings, people depend on the external QA done by distributions, and also their security support
13:38.54kjetilkWorkthe packages just works for me, but if they hadn't, I wouldn't run tomcat at all
13:40.58Nomad9941The problem in my case is probably the error log, it's not verbose enough to make sense. It just states that something is missing, what it is and where tomcat is searching for it is not clear.

14:48.54MHSLeidolon, try to specify URIEncoding for your http connector in server.xml
14:49.41eidoloni'm actually hard-specifying the content-type in teh request header.  we're tyring to figure out how this could have changed - we didn't change much.  certainly haven't touched server.xml :)

16:21.39gordiemy problem seems to relate to the fact that nonsecure cookies persist to secure connection, but the reverse is not true, so I now do a check in my page header to see if the session.isNew() and request.getScheme().equals("https") and if both are true, I redirect to a non-secure page, which then redirects back to itself securely again.... I know... it's not ideal, but it seems to fix the issue

16:42.08pfna non-secure cookie can be made secure, but not vice versa
16:44.08gordiewhich makes sense, but took a while to track down my error, as it was only showing up when people had recently cleared there internet cache, and accessed the site with a bookmark to a secure page
