00:01.17alpha255i downloaded the jdk 6 file from  java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
00:01.34alpha255jdk 6 update 6 is what i'm working with
00:02.13MHSLalpha255, seems ok
00:02.52alpha255is sooooo close
00:05.13alpha255is starting over from scratch removed both java and tomcat
00:05.16alpha255rebooting
00:05.51alpha255the service was removed too
00:07.10alpha255should I just installe the jdk at teh custom setup screen?
00:09.56MHSLalpha255, actually you don't really need to install it as service, if you just need it for development, you can simply run the startup.bat or catalina.bat scripts
00:10.21MHSLyou can get it up within 5 minutes
00:10.21alpha255k
00:11.12MHSLalpha255, youo can leave the jdk installation alone, just download the archive, zip or tar.gz package from tomcat website, then extract it somewhere, then run startup.bat, just to make sure that java is in your path
00:11.39alpha255k
00:15.28alpha255tomcat.apache.org/download-60.cgi
00:15.47alpha255i'll get the .zip'd one
00:18.03MHSLalpha255, ok, good luck, i'm gtg to work now
00:18.13alpha255thank you :)
00:18.30alpha255much appreciated

01:36.10sanityI'm running 6.0.16, which I installed from the .tgz.  The manager is up and running, and I've deployed my WAR file without complaint - and its listed in the Applications table.  Yet, when I visit the URL its supposed to be at, I get a 404.  Anyone got any ideas about what the problem could be?
01:47.51grantrulessanity: no welcome page?
01:49.00sanitygrantrules: I get a welcome page for Tomcat
01:49.16sanitygrantrules: in fact, I use the Tomcat manager (at /manager) to upload my WAR file
01:49.38sanitygrantrules: and its listed in the Applications table and claims to be running, get I get a 404 where it claims to be
01:50.14grantrulesmeh?
01:50.23grantrulesi mean welcome page in the application
01:50.30sanitygrantrules: no, just a 404 page
01:50.47grantruleswhat's supposed to show up?
01:51.01sanity"The requested resource (/UprizerMusic/) is not available."
01:51.04sanityits a GWT app
01:51.33sanitythe Web Application manager claims its at http://freddy.thoof.com:8088/UprizerMusic
01:51.38sanitybut I get a 404
01:51.46grantrulesokay, but is there an index.jsp or anything?
01:51.52grantrulesany welcome files set up
01:52.06sanitywell, its a GWT app
01:52.44sanityi think there should, at least, be something at http://freddy.thoof.com:8088/UprizerMusic/com.uprizer.music.Main/Main.html
01:53.24sanitygrantrules: i created the WAR from Cypal Studio for Eclipse
01:53.55grantrulesare there any static files you can hit?
01:54.57sanitywell, I think Main.html is a static file
01:55.38grantrulesyou think?
01:56.30grantrulesif you go to /webapps/UprizerMusic/com.uprizer.music.Main/Main.html , that file exists?
01:56.35sanitywell, unfortunately its all created by the framework I'm using
01:56.51sanityI get a 404 for http://freddy.thoof.com:8088/UprizerMusic/com.uprizer.music.Main/Main.html
01:57.02grantrulesok. that doesn't sound like a static file
01:57.10sanityhmmm, ok
01:57.27sanitymaybe I just need to talk to the Cypal Studio guys, the WAR is being generated by their code
01:57.39sanityI appreciate you trying to help though
01:57.49grantrulesdrop a random file in the UprizerMusic file and see if you can access it
01:58.35sanityok, let me poke around a bit
01:58.49sanitywhere does Tomcat put WAR files that are uploaded through the web interface?
01:59.07sanityah, found it
01:59.08grantrulesi don't know. never used it
01:59.48sanityok, there is a file at /usr/local/tomcat/webapps/UprizerMusic/Main.html
02:00.28grantruleshttp://freddy.thoof.com:8088/UprizerMusic/Main.html
02:00.30grantrulesit's deployed
02:00.42grantrulesare you sure you're going to the right URL?
02:00.49sanityah!
02:01.34sanityok, still not there, but this is progress
02:02.27sanityI think I can probably take it from here, thanks for the help
02:02.31grantrulesi just don't know anything about gwt or whatever. but it sounds like tomcat is working fine

13:44.14hendrixskiMHSL: the tools.jar thing was a diffrent error... it wasn't finding javac, and this forum post led me to copy it into cmomon/lib:  http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=494649
13:44.43MHSLthat should be because you have ant.jar under WEB-INF/lib, otherwise that shouldn't happen

13:54.48hendrixskiupdated logs here:  http://rafb.net/p/fF764558.html
13:56.07hendrixskiand this is what it printed out on the localhost:8080/mmweb screen: http://rafb.net/p/Hpj4kS71.html
13:56.22hendrixskithat is, after I removed ant.jar from under Web-Inf
13:59.53AnnizdvayanuMC: I've made it work :o I needed to add an event to call a method if the certificate isn`t secure..and, since I don't care of if it's secure or not, I just "return true" and it worked :)
13:59.59Annizthanks for your help
13:59.59hendrixskiand... I just removed tools.jar from common/lib  and the examples still work... but the same error persists on my web-app
14:01.51dvayanuanniz: you are welcome
14:02.21dvayanuhendrixski: he misses ant not java tools
14:02.23Annizbut I guess it's a bit of a hack; when we'll release, I guess we'll find a better way to make a real certificate
14:02.27dvayanudo you have ant?
14:02.45dvayanualternatively, have you downloaded the installer or the gziped version (in case i missed the answer)
14:02.48hendrixskidvayanu: oh.  lol, I think so.  lemme install that :-p
14:03.12dvayanuhendrixski: than define ANT_HOME or copy the jar fro mant
14:03.17*** part/#tomcat maxmc (n=maxmc@ip-62-143-127-235.hsi.ish.de)
14:03.42dvayanuactually newer tomcats do not need ant anymore, they use jdt
14:04.10dvayanumaybe you should give latest 5.5.x a try
14:04.16dvayanui am pretty sure it will work better
14:04.50dvayanudpownload, unzip, start, enjoy

14:05.28hendrixskiOh god... shell in Windows is not friendly
14:08.32MHSLhendrixski, did you change anything on the default web.xml?
14:09.18hendrixskiMHSL: no, I don't believe I have
14:09.54MHSLhendrixski, or is there anything on your webapp web.xml that configures jsp compiler?
14:10.55hendrixskiMHSL: I can check. I'm in the process of installing ant, it takes longer than I expected.
14:11.16MHSLyou dont need ant
14:11.54MHSLand you dont even need to do any installation with ant, you can simply extract it
14:15.29hendrixskiMHSL: oh... I just went through this:    http://dita-ot.sourceforge.net/doc/ot-userguide13/xhtml/installing/windows_installingant.html
14:17.40hendrixskiMHSL: under Webapps/mmweb/web.xml  I don't see anything that says JSP, or compile
14:18.08MHSLhendrixski, under mmweb/web.xml ? it should be under mmweb/WEB-INF/web.xml
14:19.25hendrixskiMHSL: in mmweb/WEB_INF/web.xml the only mention of jsp in where it defines the error page, error coded 404 and all that
14:19.44hendrixskiagain, nothing about a compiler
14:20.00hendrixski:-(
14:20.35MHSLok, there shouldnt be any other web.xml except the one inside WEB-INF
14:20.41MHSLit's not WEB_INF
14:20.49hendrixskioh
14:21.03hendrixskilol, WEB_INF was a typo
14:21.27hendrixskibut I should delete the other web.xml?
14:21.38MHSLanyway what i think is this, 1) the app is a mess by itself 2) there is no proper documentation accompanied with the webapp on how to deploy the webapp 3) you don't have any experience with tomcat/java in general
14:22.17MHSLwhich makes everything becomes very messy as it's supposed to be
14:22.20hendrixskiMHSL: you would be correct on all 3
14:22.55hendrixskiwell... I mean, I've experience programming java desktop apps, but none that deal with Tomcat
14:23.28MHSLbecause 1) with the latest tomcat 5.5 you don't need ant/tools.jar to compile jsp 2) having ant.jar inside WEB-INF/lib is a sign of something is going wrong
14:24.58hendrixskiMHSL: when the app was written it was on 5.5.9    did it have ant then?  maybe that's why he put ant.jar in WEB-INF/lib
14:25.21MHSLhendrixski, it doesnt need ant, tomcat comes with its own jsp compiler
14:26.28djrI just realized how amazingly little I know about tomcat
14:26.33hendrixskilol.  Yeah.  There is something horribly wrong with the app then.  But the original developer swears up and down that it runs and is fully functional
14:27.02MHSLthere was a version that was shipped with jsp compiler which did not support java 1.5 new features, but i dont remember spefically which version it was
14:29.43MHSLhowever, to enable java 1.5 features on that tomcat version, we can modify the global web.xml to change the jsp compilersourcevm and compilertargetvm, hence it will use ant to compile all jsp and you also need tools.jar to be put under common/lib
14:30.39hendrixskiooohhh, so that's why that forum had the thing about putting tools.jar in common/lib
14:32.28hendrixskiI didn't see anything about changing the compiler inside of web.xml though
14:32.42MHSLany compilersourcevm or compilertargetvm?
14:35.33hendrixskiMHSL: no, I searched the files "compile"
14:35.39MHSLok
14:37.04hendrixskiMHSL: would you recommend the advice from this: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=579806&messageID=2928513  ?
14:37.10hendrixskior do you have a better link you'd recommend?
14:41.32MHSLhendrixski, you dont need to do that for the latest version of tomcat 5.5
14:41.46hendrixskik
14:41.58MHSLthat's exactly i was talking about on how to make tomcat 5.5 be able to compile jsp with java 1.5 features
14:42.01hendrixskiwell, I'll just email the dev again and tell him he's full of crap and his application can't run
14:42.18MHSLas you can see someone also mentioned how to change web.xml
14:42.33MHSLyou ask him a full instruction on how to deploy his webapp
14:43.03MHSLrather than saying it's crap, so it's better just ask him for details instructions
14:43.16MHSLi'm going to sleep, good luck
14:43.19hendrixskiLOL, his instructions were just to drop it into the manage/html portal and hit run
14:43.28hendrixskiMHSL: thanks! I appreciate the help
14:43.29hendrixski:-)
14:43.37MHSLtell him, it doesnt work as he expected, and ask for resolution
14:44.30hendrixskior, I should say, I appreciate you taking the time to help.  I know I don't do it as often as I should on IRC, usually just helping on #Ubuntu, but... yeah.  :-) thanks :-)

23:29.37jasonboxi: Not yet.  I'm pondering whether to try to make one.. it's still very early.
23:31.27oxihttp://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/tomcat/sandbox/tomcat-lite/
23:31.43oxijasonb: are you maintaining one?
23:32.21jasonboxi: Not yet.  I'm mainly just interested in the ongoing development.
23:32.37jasonbI know that what Costin is writing is something lots of developers want.
23:32.45oxiactually I just thought it would be cool to use a small stripped down webserver for servlet debugging through a http connection
23:33.40oxithen I found some jetty sources how you can use embedded jetty from ant to serve just about a servlet without the whole deployment stuff and web.xml and so on.
23:34.13jasonbYou could always embed Tomcat.. the "Embedded" class has been there since the Tomcat 4.0 days.  But, it isn't necessarily as simple to use.
23:34.28oxithen I thought the same could be done with tomcat (the reference container) and stumbled over above url googling
23:35.56oxijasonb: yes I've done the embedding before. But I only did war deployment. Then I realized that I could just add and map a servlet
23:36.26oxiI like to strip things down to the bone and take things out which I don't require
23:36.46oxithat's why the lite version interests me
23:37.14oxiI was wondering if tomcatlite.com will be the future site for the above source code
23:37.50oxiand I wonder if the embedded tomcat in gwt is the same as above
23:38.27oxiyes, I know that I can embedd tomcat 4,5,6 easily and just pick a few of it's jars
23:38.53oxibut I thought the lite version would be even more light weight
23:40.09oxiyeah, jetty people mostly argument about size.
23:40.35jasonbThat's a little silly, considering a $400 desktop box comes with a half a terabyte of HD space these days.
23:40.40oxiBut I always believed that tomcat would be pretty much the same size if reduced
23:40.46jasonbPlus, networks are much faster now.
23:40.56oxijasonb:yeh, ok you're right about that

23:41.48oxi:-)
23:42.40oxiyou're right, it's silly but I still love to play with size.
23:43.01oxieven though I got 10 TB space here :-)
23:43.09Dwayne_Hickshmm... I'm not sure what special about GWT's hosted mode tomcat
23:44.11oxiDwayne: I first thought it's just normal embedded tomcat
23:45.08oxiI realized that google is using a standardcontext which would actually let you use the tomcat manager in embedded mode and script deployment to embedded tomcat
23:45.27oxihowever, during searching for a tomcat lite binary package I stumbled over this site:
23:45.28oxihttp://css.dzone.com/news/working-with-gwt-shell
23:45.43oxiwhich mentions the term "tomcat lite" in the middle
23:46.02oxithat made me believe the gwt version is stripped down a little
23:46.28oxihowever it would probably be very easy to verify, but I did't have a look
23:46.31Dwayne_HicksI don't know, there is some changes to hosted mode coming up
23:46.48oxiyep, that's what I thought
23:46.52Dwayne_HicksI wouldn't count on things staying the same ;)
23:47.03oxiI believe things are changing in the last few days
23:47.28oxiand there's been some activity on the sanbox/tomcat-lite
23:48.11oximaybe someone wants to keep up with jetty's concept or maybe gwt is creating a smaller download
23:48.14oxidon't know
23:48.42oxihowever like jasonb said, it's actually silly, but for me it's fun
23:48.50Dwayne_Hicksthere is an svn branch that has a much different hosted mode, I can't remember what its called
23:48.57oxii'll have look and try the compile that sandbox version

23:49.25Dwayne_Hickslike ooph or something
23:49.39oxiah, interesting
23:51.40Dwayne_HicksI dont know if it changes any of the tomcat stuff but
23:51.53Dwayne_Hicksits going to be much nicer ;)
23:52.02Dwayne_Hicksno more 40x slower in hosted mode ;)

23:52.36Dwayne_Hicksyou can do it now but its a pita
