16:16.13sicruiseIf on reboot it stopped working you are missing something from your startup script. How did you install tomcat? Is it installed as a service?
16:16.18malickalso tomcat chanced my startup.sh file to some crap file so I tried to restore what happened in my startup.sh file hoping it will get me back into a stable situation but my efforts didn't helped untill I found a talk on the web http://cefn.com/blog/ubuntutomcat.html

16:19.30sicruiseA clean install and you can't just set JAVA_HOME to a valid jdk and run startup.sh ?
16:21.09malicksicruise my startup.sh looks like this http://pastebin.com/m3d25b43e
16:22.58sicruiseI take it you have javac in /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.15/bin
16:24.28malicksicruise yes I do
16:25.49sicruisetry http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/installing-tomcat-6-on-ubuntu/
16:25.54malicksicruise did you saw http://cefn.com/blog/ubuntutomcat.html
16:27.26sicruiseYup, seems like a strange propblem with a workaround that wouldn't be recommended for a stable instance of tomcat. But I'm guessing...
16:27.36sicruiseYou can't go wrong with the above guide.
16:28.00malickwell I work on a existing project which was done with tomcat 5.5 does this read 'large' project don't get into trouble if I switch to tomcat6 and why not same troubles as 5.5 on ubuntu its also a multi team project will this switch not result in inconsistencies
16:29.12sicruiseBrb... I'll download a VM of ubuntu and install it and give you the steps later.
16:29.31malickIn the morning I was able to work with the tomcat manager but I couldn't upload a WAR file to the server I'm new to Tomcat but these traps are realy anoying
16:31.02sicruiseJust drop the WAR file in the webapps directory and it deploy's itself.
16:31.27malickyes I should know before at the moment I don't have anything
16:33.24malickto all who it may concern and sicruise this are the errors I'm confronted with if I startup.sh in debug mode http://pastebin.com/m6f3ea0e9
16:33.43sicruiseIn the meantime I'd recommend you start your install again from scratch. Unpack your tar.gz file, put the java jdk in your path as JAVA_HOME and run startup.sh. Make sure iptables or a similar application is not preventing you opening a port on port 8080 / 8009 etc

20:55.05refdocCan someone help me? I am quite clueless
20:56.45refdocTomcat 5.5, sablevm on Debian etch ARM9
21:01.56jasonbrefdoc: You should use Tomcat 6 and not 5.5.
21:02.14jasonbrefdoc: SableVM probably cannot run Tomcat, but you should try Tomcat 6 if you're desperate.
21:03.12jasonbrefdoc: Newer gij implementations might run Tomcat.  Note that gij and gcj are two different things..  gij is a bytecode interpreter, whereas gcj is a compiler (bytecode --> native code).
21:03.12refdocmy problem is that there is no other JVM I can get to work
21:05.36jasonbYou can try kaffe.  Have you tried that one yet?
21:05.49refdocdoes not install
21:06.01refdocsome conflict in the repositories
21:06.30doctorzWhat is wrong with Sun's?
21:06.39refdocit is an ARM9 machine
21:06.54doctorzAh missed that...
21:07.03refdocsmall SmartDisk Soho NAS - reflashed to Debian
21:07.31refdocoriginally a stupid little thing, but now really nice with Debian on board
21:10.47doctorzCool, https://phoneme.dev.java.net/ is available but it is lightweight and will prob not run tomcat :) But looks interesting...

21:36.36slakanyone know if its possible to force permission on the dir that results from tomcat autpexpanding .war
21:36.42slaki need it to be 775, not 755
21:48.22jasonbslak: Before starting the Tomcat JVM process, you can set the user's current umask such that it will end up with those permissions.
21:48.37slakright
21:48.38slakto 002
21:48.48slakwould i do so in my catalina.sh?
21:48.53jasonbrefdoc: Pull down kaffe source and build it.  Forget about the debian package system in this case, it does not work.
21:49.33refdocok. I wil do this. Thanks!
21:49.57slakjasonb: where would it be most appropriate
21:50.00slakbashrc of tomcat user?
21:50.13slaki never directly log on to it, but use catalina.sh from init.d
21:51.09jasonbslak: Yeah, .bashrc for the user that runs Tomcat.
21:51.19jasonb(assuming it runs bash)
21:51.36slakwell my catalina.sh starts it using "su -l ..."
21:51.40slaksu - tomcat
21:51.48slakwill that load ,bashrc?
21:53.48slakthanks ill figure it out
21:53.49slakcya
21:56.40jasonbI think it does, yes.
