18:57.22sha1sumok. So. I couldn't find a copy of "The Absolute Freaking Idiot's Guide to Apache Tomcat 6" so I have DNS and port forwarding working to where the tomcat server comes up when my domain name is entered into the address bar but tomcat keeps changing the domain back into an IP address again. How can I get tomcat to use the domain instead of the IP address?
19:12.58jasonbsha1sum: How do you have your port forwarding set up?  What did you use?

19:15.47sha1sumjasonb: iptables
19:16.55jasonbsha1sum: Okay.  Can you put your server.xml on a paste server, like http://fpaste.org ..
19:18.43sha1sumsure
19:19.20iglabluesHi...pretty new to Tomcat....have an architectural question if anyone is willing...Tomcat version: Apache Tomcat/6.0.24...java version "1.6.0_20"...OS is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
19:19.57iglabluesCurrently running both Apache 2 and Tomcat6 on same server...multiple containers serving different content
19:20.16sha1sumjasonb: http://tomcat.pastebin.com/gnkukxDa
19:20.51iglabluesconsidering separating them out and keeping Apache as its own front-end, and putting Tomcat on its own back-end boxes
19:21.25iglablueswondering if anyone has any opinions about that kind of setup in terms of performance and security?
19:22.02jasonbsha1sum: On your 8080 Connector element, you should probably set the proxyPort and proxyHost attributes.  You may also want to set the "address" attribute.
19:23.02sha1sumjasonb: thanks! :)
19:23.09jasonbsha1sum: You're welcome.

19:34.54sha1sumjasonb: okay at first I made the mistake of setting proxyPort to "8080" and proxyName to "www.domain.com" and of course it didn't work because 8080 is not available on the WAN, but it *was* attempting to connect to "www.domain.com" instead of the IP.. then I changed the proxyPort to "80" and now it's working but the IP still shows instead of the domain... Is there some sort of caching maybe going on or is it something that happens in th
19:42.37sha1sumgah. It's freakin' caching I can see from the firebug net panel
19:42.38sha1sumhmm
19:51.15sha1sumugh. it's just not using the domain
19:51.45sha1sumI've set hostname, made entry in /etc/hosts, set proxyPort and proxyName on the connector, tried someone's computer in another office who's never visited the site
19:52.38sha1summaybe I should just go ahead and setup the apache configuration
19:57.02sha1sumactually I can't do that. we depend on ant tasks that control tomcat
20:39.43jasonbsha1sum: Put your new server.xml up on a paste server so we can see.

20:47.57sha1sumjasonb: it's fine. I looked at the HTTP headers. The response is coming from squid. Damn LAN has a caching proxy.
20:48.00sha1sumheh
20:50.01jasonbahh.  Set no caching headers for the proxy..
20:50.02jasonb/ Tell proxy caches not to cache this resource.
20:50.03jasonbhttpResponse.addHeader("Cache-Control", "proxy-revalidate");
20:50.23jasonbAlso:
20:50.26jasonb/ Standard HTTP 1.0 cache disabling header.  Prevents caching at the proxy server.
20:50.26jasonbhttpResponse.setDateHeader("Expires", 0);
20:50.40sha1sumnice.
20:50.43jasonb(those are supposed to be double slashes on the front.. heh)
20:51.07sha1sumomw home now but will definitely give that a shot. Thanks! Switched up to Apache2 with reverse ProxyPass now
20:51.14sha1sumthat doesn't emulate squid does it?

21:45.51sha1sumOK so I guess when you set up Apache2 to use a reverse proxy with a ProxyPass directive to direct port 80 traffic to tomcat:8080 it emulates squid when doing so, so I thought our LAN at work had a caching proxy server, but it doesn't
21:46.39sha1sumand all the links in the <a> elements on my pages are getting generated as "http://www.domain.com/foo/bar.html" instead of the IP so somehow I think tomcat is turning the domain into the IP
21:48.35sha1sumhttp://tomcat.pastebin.com/0eL0SmhM
21:48.39sha1sum^---- server.xml
21:52.49jasonbsha1sum: Are you using httpd now or are you using iptables?  Those are two different sets of configuration.
21:54.37jasonbsha1sum: Also, you should try a simple webapp first, with like one html page in it that wouldn't redirect anywhere.. Then, when you have that working, try other webapps.
21:56.46sha1sumjasonb: now I'm using httpd with reverse proxy
21:56.56sha1sumflushed iptables
21:57.56sha1sumjasonb: ok... how about when i type in http://www.domain.com/invalidsubdirectory it changes even that to the IP just for the error?
21:58.10jasonbThere was probably nothing wrong with iptables.. you had a different problem.
21:58.48sha1sumyeah I found that out too just don't want to change it back now lol
21:59.18jasonbNow you have an additional server whose configuration would need to be examined, understood, and corrected.
21:59.22sha1sumthe proxy works just same domain-to-ip translation as before
21:59.55jasonbThat proves that the problem wasn't with iptables.
22:00.11sha1sumyeah
22:00.39sha1sumI'm going to end up hosting more stuff on this server anyway, so I was planning on getting apache going.
22:00.50sha1sumjust didn't think it would be so soon.

22:10.25sha1sumjasonb: I also just tried setting the address attribute on the connector to no avail.
22:13.55jasonbTry using telnet to make requests "by hand" and inspect the response that is coming back from Tomcat.. does it redirect you to the IP address?  Or, do links contain URLs that have just IP addresses in them?

22:36.12sha1sumomg
22:36.36sha1sumso instead of setting up A records for the damn domain and its appropriate subdomains, he setup a FORWARD to the IP address
22:38.14sha1sumjasonb: http://tomcat.pastebin.com/9SDpvEm1
22:38.41sha1sumjasonb: my server is CentOS with (obviously) Apache and Tomcat
22:38.51sha1sum(httpd and tomcat I should say)
22:39.44jasonbSo then why does it answer as IIS?
22:48.12sha1sumbecause he basically set it up as Microsoft's version of rewrite I suppose
22:48.37sha1sumnslookup shows the wrong IP address
22:48.40sha1sumit goes to the IIS server
22:48.47sha1sumIIS server detects it's for domain.com
22:48.54sha1sumredirects (probably)
22:48.59sha1sumthat's my guess
