03:36.01cyrus_mctrying to find out why the webapp gets deployed at my-webapp and also at myServletWAR
03:36.15cyrus_mci have autoDeploy set to false so it shouldn't be getting deployed twice
03:36.27cyrus_mcit should only be deployed via the Context element in server.xml
03:38.18cyrus_mci can even remove the context element and the path my-webapp goes away but myServletWAR still exists
03:38.47MaxPrtthe deployment name is typically the same as the name of the WAR?

03:42.10cyrus_mci can set it to what I want in the <Context element

For example, if I have a webapp called my-webapp in the webapps directory. I add a context for that with path test-webapp. I can then access it by the path test-webapp or my-webapp.

18:38.38cyrus_mcwyvern`: just to ensure I also set deployXML = false
18:39.00cyrus_mcI am just trying to find out if it deploys twice or just sets up to paths to the same servlet
18:39.18cyrus_mcwyvern`: I can even remove the context from server.xml and it is still available at the app directory name path
18:46.09wyvern`hmm
18:46.17wyvern`if you put something in a servlet's init() you should see if it's being called twice
18:46.51wyvern`double check the context docs and make sure you've turned off everything related to autoloading, though it sounds like you have
18:47.42randrewjcyrus_mc: maybe you want deployOnStartup  false, see the host docs, maybe deployIgnore  helps you.

22:17.17*** join/#tomcat Nitrus^ (~Scott@sceapdsd43-75.989studios.com)
22:18.27Nitrus^i was wondering what the differences were between using a servlet to do startup operations or a contextlistener.  some code i've inherited using a servlet to start up some background threads and I was wondering if it's worth switching to a context listener instead
22:18.36jasonbmoqq: Yeah, there's probably no Tomcat JULI "on" switch for all classes, all levels.  Each webapp has one log channel (or whatever the word should be), and you have to explicitly set the level if you don't want to take the Tomcat-specified default.
22:19.50jasonbNitrus^: Servlets have been in the specification for longer than context listeners.  So if your webapp(s) have to be able to run on older servlet containers that don't yet support context listeners, then they'd need to be implemented as servlets.
22:19.58moqqjasonb: even setting FINE doesn't seem to work though
22:20.11moqqjasonb: it actually appears to be ignoring everything i put into the logging.properties
22:20.36jasonbNitrus^: Also, the behavior of when servlets start and when they run has been very clearly and unambiguously documented for more revisions of the servlet spec than that of context listeners.. at least for what you're talking about.
22:21.15jasonbmoqq: How are you explicitly setting your webapp's log channel to FINE?  If it is one line, you can paste it right in here.
22:21.39Nitrus^sounds like i should go with the, not broken dont fix it approach, thanks jason
22:22.21moqqjasonb: com.mypackage.level = FINE ?
22:22.38moqqjasonb: then com.mypackage.handlers = java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler
22:24.26jasonbNitrus^: You're welcome.
22:25.01jasonbmoqq: No, that's not quite the right syntax for setting a webapp's logger level..
22:25.48jasonbIt's more like: org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/yourwebappname].level = FINE
22:26.05moqqah

22:31.44levi086{Tomcat 6.0.29; Java SE6U23 JDK; Win Xp Pro 32-bit} -- Very trivial question: I have an EAR file containing a WAR file which depends on a standard JAR file (also included in the EAR file) which fails to see any classes found in that JAR file. I believe this is a EAR Classpath problem - can anyone help me? Thanks!
22:33.11moqqhrm
22:36.35jasonblevi086: Just put that "standard jar file" into Tomcat's lib/ directory and restart Tomcat's JVM.
22:38.02levi086That is a viable solution, however I would like to keep a wrapped EAR file with all the required contents within it. I'm checking the application.xml at the moment and it seems the JAR file is not being included... that might be the cause I presume ?
22:44.16jasonblevi086: Well, EAR files are for full Java EE application servers.  Tomcat is a subset.. the web container.  So, Tomcat is concerned with your WAR file, and that's it.  Tomcat does not have code to understand EAR files.
22:45.51levi086Sorry for not specifying earlier - tomcat is pre-bundled with OpenEJB. I'm checking if it's the application.xml that's got something missing...
22:46.43jasonbahh.
22:50.54levi086it worked! application.xml had the missing <module> declaration for the JAR file. Thanks just the same!
