00:34.34 | linuxalien | Hi guys |
00:35.19 | mdirc | I enabled "Remote Desktop" in |
00:36.18 | mdirc | I enabled "Remote Desktop" in System preferences, what port does this service run on? |
00:36.43 | linuxalien | Is that the KDE version? |
00:38.01 | mdirc | gnome version ubuntu |
00:40.58 | Kuyaedz-work | far as I know its 5900 default |
00:43.48 | mdirc | I am trying to connect to the remote machine using VNC Client using port forwarding established on putty (which is working), but the Real Vnc viewer errors out saying it cannot connect, and putty logs says that the connection was refused by the server. The port forwarding is setup correctly, I tested it using nc on the ubuntu server and using telnet from the local machine. So, I was wondering if remote desktop was running on 5900. Any ideas? TIA |
00:56.21 | mdirc | which file has the configuration for the remote desktop preferences? TIA |
01:01.24 | mdirc | Is there some security setting in the default installation of ubuntu 6.0.6 that disables wan computers from accessing remote desktop or port forwarding? |
01:31.35 | linuxalien | Good question. I'd like to know if there is. |
01:31.39 | linuxalien | I gotta learn Ubuntu |
01:52.16 | Kuyaedz-work | mdirc: no. I access my machines remotely (office to home) and all I did was set the port-forwarding on my router |
01:52.29 | Kuyaedz-work | mdirc: I think what we're running into is the complication of doign it over ssh |

18:08.13 | mdirc | Here is the solution If somebody runs into this problem --- I found the problem with my vncviewer not being able to connect to the gnome's vino-vncserver (remote desktop in Gnome) running on ubuntu. The problem is that you need to be logged into gnome for vino to be listening. If you are sitting at the gdm login screen, then vino is not enabled. This behaves exactly like the remote assistance feature on xp. So I will have to install a different vncserver so |

18:43.11 | Kuyaedz-work | mdirc: what was the end-solution? |
18:43.25 | Kuyaedz-work | atoponce: did you ever follow-up again with the SLC library for a meet? |
18:44.46 | mdirc | Kuyaedz: You can login to the machine physically and make sure you do not log out of it. Then you can login in using any vncviewr remotely. This aplies if you only have the remote desktop in System-Preferences enabled. |

18:45.20 | Kuyaedz-work | ohh, so the remote machine wasn't logged in on your previous attempts? |
18:45.31 | mdirc | yep |
18:45.35 | Kuyaedz-work | I've always left my home machine logged in & never had problems doing VNC remotely. |
18:45.43 | Kuyaedz-work | that figures.. |
18:46.01 | mdirc | but when I was on the same lan and tested it, I was logged in, which I forogot about when I was debugging the problem remotely :) |
18:46.11 | atoponce | you should be able to login via vnc. seems silly to have to be logged in first |
18:46.20 | Kuyaedz-work | its always something simple |
18:46.30 | mdirc | yeah that's the gnome's vino vnc doing it |
18:46.38 | Kuyaedz-work | I know there is a way to be prompted with a remote GUI login screen, but I never looked too far into it. |
18:47.30 | mdirc | but that makes perfect sense because vino-vnc is there for a toally different purpose to allow sharing a desktop for helping someone. However, if I understand correclty, regular vnc does not allow you to login and see the exact same session as another user |
18:47.35 | Kuyaedz-work | atoponce: hope it isn't too late to try & get a room. We've got a meet in 10 days |
18:48.19 | atoponce | i'll give it a shot |
