01:57.03majorHey I'm new to linux and I just finished installing Ubuntu dapper, and I'm having trouble getting my music to work. I have a friend that was giving me a hand with this he knows a lot more than I do and he has already downloaded some packet so that I can listen to mp3's. However when I select an mp3 to play using any music program (such as XMMS) I get an error message that reads: Please check that:
01:58.10majorYour sound card is configured properly  You have the correct output plugin selected    No other program is blocking the soundcard.
01:58.22majorI have no idea what I need to do to fix this so that I can listen to music.
02:11.27stuporglueStill there major?
02:12.14majoryes, but I kindof got some help elseware...following up on what they suggested, though I am still up for your input.
02:13.16stuporglueI was going to find something on the Ubuntu wiki, which usually has pretty good documentation
02:13.52stuporglueYou using Feisty (7.4) or something else
02:14.51stuporglueThis has links and info on several restricted formats if it's a codecs issue https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
02:16.08majorI am getting this error:  Couldn't find package gstreamer0.10-pitfdll
02:16.17majoris there a repos that I am missing?
02:21.11stuporglueI've got it in my pacakge list, so I'm guessing you are

02:22.32stuporgluemajor: Do you know where to put repositories?
02:22.39majorIs fiesty different than 6.06 LTS?
02:22.58stuporglueYes in the sense that it's more up to date. Most files will be in the same places
02:23.34majorStuporglue: No. Like I said this is my first day with ubuntu, as well as linux...had a little (meaning insignificant) experiance with Red Hat 9.0...
02:23.38stuporglueThe Ubuntu number is the year number, then the month number, so 6.06 is June 2006. Feisty is going to be 7.04 for April 207
02:23.41stuporglue2007
02:24.25stuporglueIf you're not going to be building from source, you can download this list here to your desktop: http://stuporglue.org/downloads/sources.list
02:25.08stuporglueThen copy it to the repository list location. If you're cool with using the terminal you can do "sudo cp ~/Desktop/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list". Enter your password when it asks for it
02:28.21majorAight thanks got a friend here that's going to give me a hand.
02:32.34clutchI finally figured out what my problem is with editing xorg.conf for using beryl. The file is read only, so how do I set it to read/write? I think the same file can also be edited to fix my resolution problem with my desktop
02:32.34clutchisn't there a command to change a files attributes with the terminal?
02:36.52stuporglueYou'll need to edit it with admin privileges. You can do this using "sudo" from the command line. For example, if you wanted to edit xorg.conf with the gedit text editor, you'd do "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf". Then it'll be read-write
02:37.00stuporglueDon't forget to make a backup. :-)
02:41.11clutchI have tried that and the file opens blank, but when I open it manually through gedit the file opens right but I can't edit it
02:41.41stuporgluehrm.... Try just doing "sudo gedit" and then opening the file from there.
02:43.00clutchwhen you enter your password in the terminal it is still supposed to show as ***** right?
02:43.10stuporglueno, it doesn't show up at all
02:43.16stuporglueIt does get entered though.
02:43.27burnthegreator you can do 'sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf' and use a terminal editor.
02:43.43clutchOk thought it might be messed up
02:43.57clutchI tried that earlier and got the same result
02:44.35burnthegreattry using the auto complete when putting in the dir path.
02:45.01burnthegreatso you are sure you are editing the right file
02:46.22clutchWell opening gedit and then opening the file manually seemed to work now lets see if it will let me edit it
02:52.03burnthegreatyeah it was the dir path you were using. It was thinking that you were opening a new file.

03:50.59burnthegreatwhat version of ubuntu are you using?
03:51.26HeartsbaneI have heard that but I haven't had any trouble with Beryl here, but I did see someones machine that he brought me from home where Beryl (or he did it) ate itself down to the restricted driver modules
03:51.50HeartsbaneThat was a fun project
03:52.05HeartsbaneYou still want that link clutchbo1?
03:52.38burnthegreatclutchbo1: change the device from fglrx to nv
03:53.15burnthegreatthen start X and open synaptic package manager and install the nvidia-glx device drivers

14:16.44herloZelut: did you enjoy New Jersey?
14:23.29herloI was just reading the logs from last night and clutchbol asked the question about xorg.conf.  The reason he had the problem is that xorg no longer requires the xorg.conf to run.  It can be there and provides useful info, but if not available, it will use defaults...

18:26.20clutchmmcan anyone tell me why my install doesn't seem to be a root account?
18:32.19clutchmmI think I figured it out last night while I was trying to re-edit my xorg.conf file from the command line because  the changes I made for beryl make my xserver crash. whenever I tried to open it with nano I got a blank file and at the bottom it said "new file" just like yesterday with gedit, when I tried to reboot from the command line it said "reboot must be root"
18:33.40clutchmmIf I am the only user shouldn't I be the root user?
18:34.16atoponceclutchmm: root is disabled by default in ubuntu
18:34.34atoponceuse 'sudo' before the command, then enter your password
18:35.04clutchmmwell I had to reinstall because of it. I did and it still didn't recognize me as root
18:35.29atoponcefor example 'sudo vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf'
18:35.36atoponcepassword:
18:35.42atoponceyou would enter your password here
18:35.57clutchmmthat is exactly what I did, and entered my password
18:35.58atoponcethen, you have admin priviledges to edit the file
18:36.46clutchmmI had the same problem with gedit yesterday and had to do sudo gedit then open the file manually through gedit
18:36.53atoponceare you running feisty or edgy? i think feisty is doing things differently with X
18:37.02clutchmmedgy
18:37.23atoponceand, if you are going to use a graphical tool for root access, use gksudo
18:37.37atoponcegksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, for example
18:38.04atoponceso, there is a blank xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/ ?
18:38.16clutchmmI had tried that first yesterday because that is what the beryl install guide I found said to do
18:38.39clutchmmthere was unless I opened it manually through the program
18:38.42atoponcerealize, i have never installed beryl
18:39.25clutchmmthat's alright, I know what went wrong with the install but I couldn't fix it and that had nothing to do with the install
18:40.38clutchmmfor some reason when I do sudo or gksudo and include the file path and name it doesn't recognize me as a root user
18:41.23atoponcehmmm
18:41.34atoponceare you added to /etc/sudoers ?
18:41.48clutchmmbut if I use sudo or gksudo and only open the program it works fine
18:42.02clutchmmhow do I do that?
18:42.11atoponcecat /etc/sudoers
18:42.59clutchmmit says permission denied
18:43.32atoponceheh. you need superuser privs... :)
18:43.38atoponceyou should have this in the file:
18:43.39atoponce%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL
18:43.45atoponceand you should be added to the admin group
18:44.13clutchmmwhat file do I add that to?
18:44.37clutchmmsudoers?
18:45.15atoponceyeah. it should be there by default
18:45.20atoponceif it's not, then add it
18:47.08clutchmmwell that is in the file so what now?
18:47.57clutchmmalso has "root     ALL=(ALL) ALL"
18:48.09atoponceyeah. root should
18:48.36clutchmmcan I change admin to only accept me since I am the only user
18:48.45atoponceso, then in Gnome: System -> Administration -> Users and Groups
18:49.10atoponce"Manage Groups"
18:49.18atoponcelook for admin, click "Properties"
18:49.25atoponceand make sure that you are part of the group
18:51.21clutchmmyup, but in user settings where it has my name my home dir is /home/(my name) and below that it has root with a home dir of /root
18:51.38atoponceyup
18:51.44atoponcethat's how it should be
18:52.05clutchmmso I should have root piv?
18:52.56atoponceno, you have limited timed access to root privs, when you use sudo
18:53.56clutchmmcan I change it so I have them all the time, because something is messed up if I can't do all these things that people keep telling me I can
18:54.41atoponceyou don't want that. there is a reason why they are separated
19:01.44clutchmmso then I am back to where I started with not being able to use gksudo gedit /etc/x11/xorg.conf but I can use gksudo gedit and then hit open and access the file manually. But if I need to edit the file from the command line again I can't
19:09.51atoponcenothing will open the file when you run the command? you have to open it from the editor itself?
19:10.07atoponcesudo vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf   doesn't open the file?
19:22.30clutchmmnope it just says new directory at the bottom
