00:19.54ChairmanTubeAmpHi all
00:20.34ChairmanTubeAmpAnyone have a minute to help me with a Sprint Frankenpre2 that's been working for over a year, but has recently developed a problem where it drops 3G service?
00:22.35ChairmanTubeAmpAt first I suspected that it was a dying radio. So I bought a refurb off of eBay, switched my IMEI to the refurb radio, activated the service with the refurb running 1.4.5, then meta-doctored it with a git clone from a few days ago.
00:23.09ChairmanTubeAmpThe FrankenPre2 exhibited the same problem, searching for signal and dropping 3G service.
00:23.39ChairmanTubeAmpI put the comm board back in the refurb, meta-doctored to 1.4.5 and it was fine for most of a day.
00:24.22ChairmanTubeAmpThen I meta-doctored the refurb (which is a Spring Pre- by the way) to 2.1.0 and that was fine for most of another day.
00:25.11ChairmanTubeAmpThen I took the comm board out of the refurb Pre- and put it back in the FrankenPre2 without meta-doctoring. It is better than before but still drops 3G service once or twice an hour.
00:25.47ChairmanTubeAmpDid I wind up with a bad radio from the eBay refurb, does my FrankenPre2 have a unshakable gremlin? Or what?
00:28.33ChairmanTubeAmpAlthough the "bad radio from the refurb" theory doesn't hold up based on my experience with it running 1.4.5 and 2.10 for most of two days.
00:28.51ChairmanTubeAmpWhich leaves the "gremlin in the FrankenPre2" theory.
00:29.33ChairmanTubeAmpAnother theory is that there is a problem with Sprint's data service in my area. However, my wife's FrankenPre2, also on Sprint, is not having these problems, which discounts that theory.

00:30.29ChairmanTubeAmpThe only difference between her FrankenPre2 and my FrankenPre2 is that hers started out as GSM and mine started out as Verizon CDMA. Though both radios have been swapped out for Sprint CDMA at this point, so they should be equivalent from a hardware perspective.
00:30.39ChairmanTubeAmpSo I'm out of theories here...

02:25.44ChairmanTubeAmpMan, this is a dead chat room.
02:44.34ka6sox-awaymornig
02:44.37ka6sox-awaymorning
02:50.09ka6sox-awaylessee...
02:51.18joshgilliesChairmanTubeAmp +1 to comment about dead room :P
02:51.28joshgilliesthe holdiday season may not be helping any
02:52.19ChairmanTubeAmpYeah, people might be having actual fun with other people.
02:52.21ka6sox-awayis invisible I guess.
02:52.39ChairmanTubeAmpGood morning ka6sox!
02:52.55ChairmanTubeAmpDidn't mean to ignore you, I was AFK.
02:53.26joshgilliesMorning ka6sox-away
02:53.34ChairmanTubeAmpAnyone mind if I repeat my question?
02:53.47ka6sox-awaymorning...this seems like a network issue...not a phone issue
02:53.49joshgilliesOnly if you don't mind me repeating mine from the other day
02:53.51ka6sox-awaymove it somewhere else.
02:54.31ChairmanTubeAmpThis behavior exhibits itself in multiple neighborhoods in my city.
02:54.40ka6sox-awayhmmm....
02:54.51ChairmanTubeAmpAnd my wife's phone is physically proximate to my phone and doesn't exhibit these issues.
02:55.24ChairmanTubeAmpSo it would have to be a problem with my registration that only manifests itself on the FrankenPre2.
02:55.41ka6sox-awaythe CDMA vs GSM is not an issue
02:56.07ka6sox-awayoh wait...
02:56.17ka6sox-awayyou did transfer the antenna right?
02:56.21ka6sox-awayyou have to use the sprint antenn,
02:56.35ChairmanTubeAmpYes, the whole comm assembly (the entire black plastic board)
02:57.02ChairmanTubeAmpAlso, it was working for over a year before this issue cropped up - no OS upgrades, hardware changes, etc.
02:57.18ka6sox-awayinteresting...
02:57.30ChairmanTubeAmpWhich is why I thought that it was a dying amplifier.
02:57.52ChairmanTubeAmpOr some component of the transceiver.
02:57.53ka6sox-awaydid you make sure you got the GPS and RADIO antennas right?
02:58.06ChairmanTubeAmpIn what respect?
02:58.42ChairmanTubeAmpI never messed with the antennas because I transferred the whole comm board assembly when I did the transplant.
02:58.44ka6sox-awayif you swap them it will act like this.
02:58.55ka6sox-awaythe connectors
02:59.24ka6sox-awaythere is a GPS connector and a Radio Connector
03:01.07ChairmanTubeAmpIs it possible to swap these if you're moving the whole comm board assembly?
03:01.21ChairmanTubeAmpI followed this guide: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Sprint_Pre_2
03:02.50ChairmanTubeAmpAre these the connectors you're talking about? http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/File:Slide11.PNG
03:02.56ChairmanTubeAmpIf so, there's no way I swapped those.
03:04.57ka6sox-awayno, the Coax Connectors
03:06.06ChairmanTubeAmpOk, since I transferred the whole comm board assembly, I think its very unlikely that I swapped the GPS and Radio antennas.
03:07.21ChairmanTubeAmpBut maybe there is some corrosion on the contact where the Radio lead connects to the comm board assay. Let me check that.
03:08.32ChairmanTubeAmpThis has been in my pocket for over a year and the Pre- that had this comm board for over 2 years and so it may have been exposed to some leg sweat (ugh).
03:09.56ChairmanTubeAmpThe corrosion theory would explain why it got slightly better with a new comm board assy. Only one of the two contacts would be corroded at that point.
03:10.45ChairmanTubeAmpAFK to disassemble and inspect the handset.
03:13.23ChairmanTubeAmpAnyone know which antenna is the Radio? If I have the battery cover off and I'm looking at the back of the phone, is it upper left-hand corner, upper right-hand corner, or along the bottom?
03:29.14ka6sox-awayI haven't got mine anymore (son has it)
03:34.31ChairmanTubeAmpOk, well I found some corrosion on each of the 4 screw/comm board assy interfaces. So I cleaned it off with some rubbing alcohol and we'll see if there is an improvement. I was also a little more aggressive with the screw fastening force. Hopefully I'll see improved conductivity to the antennas.
03:35.41ChairmanTubeAmpOn one of the screws it looked like some loc-tite had migrated to the top of the contact surface, which would have introduced some interference.
03:39.06ChairmanTubeAmpShoot. That didn't help. The first time I opened a new page in the browser it dropped the 3G connection.
03:39.24ka6sox-awaywhat are you using to clean it?
03:39.49ChairmanTubeAmpEthyl rubbing alcohol
03:40.12ChairmanTubeAmpsparingly applied to a q-tip
03:42.02ChairmanTubeAmpIt definitely got things shiny.
03:45.33ChairmanTubeAmpOk, its bed time on the East Coast. I'm going to sleep on this.
